BorgWarner's R2S® Turbocharging System Receives Automotive News PACE Environmental Award

BorgWarner Turbo Technology Earns Acclaim for Reducing Emissions, Saving Fuel at Inaugural Green Car Conference & Exhibition

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Nov. 17 - BorgWarner's R2S® regulated two-stage turbocharging system received a 2008 Automotive News PACE Environmental Award during the recent Green Car Conference and Exhibition in Novi, Michigan. Sponsored by Automotive News, Ernst & Young and TRC Inc., the first-ever award honors innovations that contribute to environmental sustainability and/or solve environmental problems. Winners were selected from this year's PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers' Contribution to Excellence) Award winners.

"Around the world, BorgWarner is known as a technology leader whose products improve fuel economy and emissions while boosting performance. We believe that advanced technology can give us the best of both worlds - an exhilarating driving experience and environmentally friendly vehicles," said Roger Wood, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbo & Emissions Systems. "We are proud that our products protect the environment and honored to accept this recognition of our efforts."

BorgWarner Chairman and CEO Tim Manganello was a featured panelist at the conference, discussing how technological advances in the powertrains of the future can reduce our environmental impact on the planet.

BorgWarner's R2S® regulated two-stage turbocharging system consists of two series-connected turbochargers: a smaller unit (referred to as the high-pressure turbocharger) and a larger unit (known as the low-pressure turbocharger). At low engine speeds, the smaller high-pressure turbocharger ensures spontaneous engine response without "turbo lag." With increasing engine speed, the larger low-pressure turbocharger gradually takes over more of the work, ensuring constantly increasing power and high output torque across a wide range of engine speeds. The combination allows car makers to offer low-fuel-consumption, efficient, downsized engines with the dynamic response and high peak output power of a larger engine, all with lower emissions. BorgWarner's R2S® technology has been awarded multiple patents, and more are pending.

The first large-scale passenger car production with an R2S® regulated two-stage turbocharging system was launched in 2005 on the BMW 535d, available in Europe, and in 2006 on Ford F-Series Super-Duty® trucks. To date, BorgWarner's R2S® regulated two-stage turbocharging system has also entered into series production on Fiat, Daimler and MAN vehicles.
