Bookham Tunable Transmitter Assembly Reaches Full Telcordia Qualification

Proven tunable technology to be demonstrated live at ECOC 2007

SAN JOSE, Calif., - September 12 2007 - Bookham, Inc. (Nasdaq: BKHM), a leading provider of optical components, modules and subsystems, today announced that its industry-leading LambdaFLEX(TM) 10Gb/s Tunable Transmitter Assembly (TTA) has reached full Telcordia qualification and is being shipped in volume to customers around the world. Together with the company's Tunable Small Form Factor transponder (TSFF), the TTA will be demonstrated live at ECOC 2007 later this month.

The live demonstration (stand 17049), the first of its kind in Europe, will show the ability of the Bookham tunable InP Mach-Zehnder (MZ) technology to operate with extremely fast wavelength tuning over full C band in a noise-loaded environment, replicating the conditions under which the products perform in long haul networks.

"Bookham is driving the development of tunable technology, with hundreds of our TTAs being shipped to global tier 1 customers," said Jon White, product line manager, InP MZ and tunable portfolio, at Bookham. "The market is demanding tunable products of the highest standard: products that can perform in live networks, not just in the lab. With full Telcordia qualification, the TTA meets the stringent demands that all our telecoms products adhere to; the live demonstration at ECOC will highlight this industry-leading capability."

The TTA integrates the Bookham LambdaFLEX(TM) Tunable Compact MZ onto an iTLA-sized module platform - a footprint significantly smaller than that offered by the combination of a continuous wave laser and external modulator. The TL7000NCD TTA is a negative chirped C band part, designed for uncompensated 80km links, which enables economic full band tunable deployments in the regional metro applications space. The TTA features an industry standard iTLA interface and command set.

The Bookham TL9000 TSFF 300pin Transponder combines the Tunable Compact MZ with a Bookham APD receiver to create the world's first MSA-compliant TSFF transponder in a 76mm x 56mm x 11.4mm package. While previous SFF transponders focussed on intermediate reach point-to-point links, the Bookham TSFF expands this capability with a zero chirp option for multispan long haul applications where low OSNR conditions are common, as well as a standard negative chirp option for regional and metro applications.

Unlike competing technologies, the Bookham LambdaFLEX(TM) tunable laser portfolio is built upon a single InP optical chip laser platform. This platform, which has no moving parts, is protected by patents in the US and other countries.

During ECOC, Bookham Chief Engineer Robert Keys will take part in the Market Focus Seminars, presenting on the emergence of electro-optic devices to drive network capacity growth. The presentation will take place on Tuesday 18th at 12:00 in the Market Focus arena on the exhibition floor.
