Original Press Release:

CDRH- and CE-compliant Kyma(TM)-Series Lasers at 488 nm

Carlsbad, California-Melles Griot, a global supplier of lasers and photonics components, today unveiled the 85 BCD series of blue DPSS lasers - CDRH and CE compliant versions of the Kyma 488-nm lasers - for laboratory use and convenient for the design and certification of OEM laser based systems.

85 BCD-series lasers produce up to 20 mW of output at 488 nm in a linearly polarized, nearly circular beam (1.1:1 aspect ratio) with an M² of <1.2. They use the same control electronics and have the same beam diameter and divergence characteristics as Melles Griot 85 YCA-series 561-nm lasers. This commonality of features and functions make it easy to design multiple lasers into a system, to combine beams, or to coaxially couple multiple lasers into a fiber. The 85 BCD-series, which has the best energy efficiency available, is priced much lower than other lasers with equivalent power and performance. The compact, conduction-cooled laser head incorporates thermoelectric cooling and automatic power control for stable, long-term operation. Power drift over 24 hours is less than 5 percent.

The Kyma ("wave" in Greek) technology platform, introduced in 2005 for OEM configuration systems, dramatically simplifies the construction of DPSS lasers without sacrificing beam quality or performance. The result is a laser with fewer parts and exceptional reliability which can be manufactured in volume at a relatively low cost.

"As a product leader, Melles Griot is responsive to our customers by expanding our product offering to meet their long-term needs," says Emery Skarupa, general manager of the Melles Griot Laser Division. "The Kyma Series offers the biomedical, life science, and other diverse market sectors technology that meets today's and tomorrow's rigorous requirements."

Melles Griot is a leading global supplier of photonics products including optical components and systems, lasers, motion-control systems, laser measurement instrumentation, optomechanical hardware, and vibration isolated optical tables and workstations. The company has manufacturing and distribution activities in 41 countries, serving industries as diverse as semiconductor, biotechnology, metrology, and research. Melles Griot is a Barloworld Scientific company.
