Blue Coat Introduces Business Process-Based Bandwidth Management and Quality of Service

Technology Prioritizes Traffic by Business Process, Application and User - Going Beyond Simple Packet-Based Scheme

SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 10 // -- Blue Coat® Systems (NASDAQ:BCSI), the leader in secure content and application delivery, today announced a new bandwidth management and Quality of Service (QoS) enhancement for the MACH5 acceleration technology framework integrated with its Blue Coat SG family of appliances. Blue Coat SG appliances can now uniquely prioritize traffic based on a comprehensive understanding of user, application and the nature of interaction with the application, rather than by application protocol or packet identification data, such as source and destination. For instance, Blue Coat SG appliances can distinguish between order entry and a reporting request within an application and give a higher priority to the person entering an order. Traditional bandwidth management solutions are not able to differentiate traffic beyond rudimentary understanding of packets, resulting in limited QoS effectiveness.

In addition to prioritizing by user, group and specific business process, the MACH5 enhancements to Blue Coat SG appliances will enable the system to mark traffic and pass the prioritization information along to other networking devices supporting QoS schemes (e.g. DiffServ), such as routers and switches. After determining the priority based on business process, The Blue Coat SG appliances will set the appropriate ToS bits of each packet of traffic to convey the proper prioritization to other networking equipment.

"Up until now, Quality of Service schemes have been blind to business processes," said Steve Mullaney, vice president of marketing for Blue Coat Systems. "The infrastructure has been there, but it has lacked intelligence. Now, Blue Coat SG appliances with MACH5 technology accelerate and control traffic based on real business imperatives."
