Original Press Release:

IBM eServer BladeCenter HS40 -- Fast 2.8 GHz/400 MHz, Xeon MP Processors, 4-Way Power Application for Blade-Thin Servers, with SCSI Expansion Storage Unit

Overview
Boost processing speed for your high-density BladeCenter(TM) HS40
blades to four-way capability with "double-wide" eserver BladeCenter HS40 blade server with Intel(TM) Xeon MP processors.

This new offering includes 2.8 GHz processors with 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB), installed in a new BladeCenter or as an upgrade to an existing BladeCenter installation. Up to seven 4-way blade servers are supported in a BladeCenter chassis.

This eserver BladeCenter HS40 blade server advances application serving with:
o Performance
o Density
o Scalability

At your command are:
o Powerful, four-way SMP-capable Xeon MP processors
o High-speed memory
o Four Intel Gb Ethernet connections
o Advanced high-availability and systems management features

Powerful blade-thin computing: The BladeCenter HS40 blade server is the key component to building your blade configuration.
Ethernet and Fibre Channel switch, Redundant Keyboard Video Mouse
(KVM) / management and power module options support advanced
configurations.

BladeCenter HS40 - Performance and scalability
o 2.8 GHz/2 MB L3 Cache, Xeon MP processors with 400 MHz FSB
o Standard 2 GB system memory with Chipkill(TM) ECC support, supporting up to 16 GB maximum
o Four Gb Ethernet connections with teaming and failover support
o Integrated management processor, monitoring critical components on each blade for remote and local systems management
o SCSI expansion connector, supporting optional storage unit
containing an Ultra320 SCSI controller and backplane support
for two hot-swap HDDs

IBM eServer® BladeCenter SCSI Storage Expansion Unit
The SCSI storage expansion unit option is supported on the IBM
BladeCenter HS20 and IBM BladeCenter HS40. It attaches directly to the blade server via an IMB connector.

When the unit is attached to the HS40, it forms a three-bay-wide blade server.

When the unit is attached to the HS20, it forms a double-wide blade server.

This expansion option obtains power through the mid-plane connector. SCSI signals are routed through the CIOB-X2 to the IMB connector of the blade server, while system management signals are directed through the I2C bus to the management processor.

o IBM Director and Remote Deployment Manager
o ServerProven® compatibility testing and Web support
o Three-year, on-site, limited warranty

Planned availability date
March 19, 2004
