BITZER Supplies Compressors for Subcritical and Transcritical CO2 Applications to Customers All Over the World

CO2 has become an increasingly important refrigerant in commercial refrigeration worldwide

North American Supermarkets are going “Green”

Customers from more than 30 countries attend CO2 training courses

Flowery Branch [GA] -- For more than 15 years, BITZER has been a leader in the development and manufacture of compressors for CO2 refrigerant and now offers a comprehensive range of compressors for subcritical and transcritical applications.

Northern European countries and Australia took the lead in promoting CO2 as a natural refrigerant back in the 90’s to combat the negative effects of traditional refrigerants on the atmosphere. BITZER, being a German company, consequently turned its attention to developing compressors for use with CO2 in commercial refrigeration applications.

After a decade of experience in Europe and elsewhere, BITZER introduced CO2 compressors to the North American market in 2008. A supermarket in Saratoga Springs, New York commissioned the first subcritical DX system in March of that year and, three years ago, the first system to feature transcritical CO2 compressors was installed in a Canadian shopping mall. Since then, numerous supermarket chains have installed CO2 systems and, according to research by shecco, nearly 100 stores were built in 2012 or are planned for 2013 utilizing CO2 DX systems.

Due to the high pressures associated with CO2 systems, compressors must be robust and meet stringent safety requirements, and technicians must be trained to safely and properly service CO2 systems.

BITZER’s CO2 compressors have UL and ASERCOM certification, and BITZER has created an extensive training program for its customers. Regular training courses using functioning systems are held at its CO2 training centers in Rottenburg (Germany), Sydney (Australia) and São Paulo (Brazil). In Rottenburg alone, 550 people from more than 30 countries have attended these courses since November 2010. The teachers provide both theoretical and practical instruction on how to work with CO2 refrigerant. During the practical part of the course, they conduct highly realistic instruction on commissioning and troubleshooting cascade and booster systems.

BITZER’s commitment to environmental stewardship is evidenced by its leadership role in providing CO2 compressors and comprehensive training to our industry.

BITZER US, Inc. is a subsidiary of the BITZER Group of 36 companies. BITZER is the world’s largest independent manufacturer of A/C and Refrigeration compressors with sales companies and production sites for reciprocating, screw, and scroll compressors as well as pressure vessels all over the globe. In 2012, 3,046 employees generated sales of 639 million euros.
