Original Press Release:

NEW 5/9 Hole Boxes for Learning and Memory!

The Panlab/Harvard Apparatus 5/9 Holes Box provides an automated and user friendly environment to carry out visual discrimination tasks in order to evaluate attention and learning.

The system includes a test chamber, food or drink dispenser, a Link Box to connect the system to a PC for control through the versatile and powerful PackWin Software (software is ordered separately).

An arc of 9 contiguous apertures in the rear wall, each housing a light, pellet dispenser, and "pusher" to detect the nose pokes into each hole. Nose pokes are detected by a photocell and rewards are dispensed by the PackWin software. Through the software, up to 8 boxes can be linked together to run multiple subjects in parallel.

PackWin is a robust program that allows the user to customize experimental protocol. PackWin allows the user to set up a pseudo-random serial reaction task, where the software randomizes the test hole, controls reinforcement and monitors percent correct, premature responses (anticipation), perseverative responses, and total nose pokes into each hole. PackWin allows flexibility to design experiments in a manner that accurately tests the hypothesis.
