Bell Selects Ametek Fuel Quantity Gauging System for New 525 Relentless Helicopter

WILMINGTON, MA — The Sensors Fluid Management Systems (SFMS) business unit of AMETEK Aerospace & Defense, has been selected by Bell Helicopter, a subsidiary of Textron, Inc., to supply the fuel quantity gauging system (FQGS) and remote fuel display panel for the new Bell 525 Relentless super medium helicopter.

The AMETEK FQGS consists of multiple custom-designed, active capacitance type fuel probes, which are configured to mount in different orientations within the fuel tank; an advanced fuel quantity signal conditioner; and a customized remote fuel display panel. The system is able to display fuel quantity in both pounds and kilograms.

“AMETEK is pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to the design and production of this remarkable new aircraft,” comments Andy Brandenburg, Vice President and Business Unit Manager for AMETEK SFMS. “The Bell 525 Relentless represents an entirely new class of helicopter designed to offer best-in-class capabilities and performance.”

“Because of its advanced design, Bell required more from a fuel quantity gauging system for the 525 than previous commercial helicopters. It selected AMETEK because of our ability to meet those requirements. Our fuel gauging system provides the highest level of accuracy available and is considered the industry standard in terms of quality, reliability and flexibility,” notes Mr. Brandenburg.

“AMETEK specifically designs its fuel gauging systems for each application. AMETEK undertakes a full tank study, a critical step in mapping the dynamics of fuel movement and transfer, prior to designing the system. The final design we provided Bell represents the most modern and advanced helicopter fuel gauging systems available.

Bell benefits from AMETEK’s more than 50 years experience in the design and development of aircraft components and systems. AMETEK has supplied fuel systems and components for nearly every type of aircraft, including helicopters, military and commercial fixed-wing aircraft, UAVs and spacecraft. In addition to fuel gauging systems, AMETEK SFMS provides instruments for measuring fuel flow rates, fuel density, fuel gauging, and fuel temperature as well as the cockpit displays for these instruments.

Unveiled at the 2012 Heli-Expo, the 16-passenger Bell 525 Relentless is designed for use in a wide range of configurations, including oil & gas, search & rescue, emergency medical response, and corporate and business transport. Its first flight is scheduled for 2014 with full certification to follow.
