New Low-Cost Digital Controller and Hyperspin Built-to-Order Spindles are Introduced by SKF Magnetic Bearings

New products find application in semiconductor fabrication machinery, hydrogen circulators, other high-speed equipment

CALGARY, Alberta - A new cost-effective digital control system for magnetic bearing arrangements and new custom-built Hyperspin spindles are now available from SKF Magnetic Bearings.

The digital control system, called the MB240, provides high bearing stability and precise positioning in semiconductor fabrication equipment and other applications. Hyperspin spindles are multi-component magnetic bearing assemblies that can be custom-built to meet user requirements.

"These products represent significant advances in magnetic bearing technology" says Shawn Gibson, Business Development Manager, Semiconductor and Vacuum Products. "The MB240's flexible design incorporates the latest signal processing innovations. Hyperspin spindles offer custom-built solutions using standardized parts and can be supplied to meet tight customer deadlines."

Magnetic bearings operate through the controlled application of electric current to ferromagnetic materials in the bearings' stationary and rotating components. Because there is no contact between the components, magnetic bearings require no lubrication and experience minimal wear during operation. They are capable of running at extremely high speeds. Digital control systems continually receive feedback from bearing sensors and precisely adjust bearing position by regulating the flow of electric current.

MB240 Digital Control System

The MB240 is a 2-amp, 40-watt system that controls small magnetic bearing arrangements. As with other Revolve digital controllers, the MB240 features Adaptive Vibration Control (AVC), which dampens rotor or housing vibration and improves application accuracy and precision. This feature equips the MB240 for turbomolecular pumps employed in semiconductor wafer production. The controller can also be used in hydrogen circulators and other high-rotation or high-vacuum applications.

Hyperspin Spindles

Hyperspin spindles are magnetic bearing arrangements that incorporate radial and thrust bearings, housings, shaft, motor and controller into a complete assembly. They have a versatile shaft interface that can accommodate virtually any type of payload, and are available in various sizes, speeds and power ratings. Synchronous spindles are available in speeds up to 60,000 rpm and power ratings up to 900 watts. Asynchronous spindles are available up to 50,000 rpm and 55 kilowatts.
