Bayer MaterialScience Tutorial Demonstrates Expertise In Polyurethanes Chemistry

Bayer MaterialScience at American Coatings Show 2008:

Charlotte, N.C., June 2, 2008 -- Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) is the world's leading manufacturer of polyurethane raw materials and polyurethane systems for rigid, semi-rigid and flexible polyurethane foams and polyurethane elastomers. In a demonstration of its expertise in this area, a BMS scientist will offer a tutorial on polyurethanes for attendees of the American Coatings Show and Conference (ACS), held June 2-5 in Charlotte, N.C.

The 90-minute tutorial, which will take place Monday, June 2, will be presented by Dr. Edwin Hortelano, Director, UV and Waterborne Technology Platforms, BMS LLC. During his presentation, Hortelano will review and compare polyurethane coatings and their typical components - polyisocyanates and polyols. He will also highlight the advantages, limitations and typical end-use applications of various polyurethane coatings technologies, such as 1K and 2K solventborne, as well as waterborne chemistries; radiation curing polyurethane coatings; polyurethane powder coatings; and polyaspartic coatings. As part of this discussion, he will address exciting new developments, such as self-healing coatings.

"From resins for waterborne to radiation-cured coatings, polyurethane chemistry is rooted in the innovative developments of Bayer," said Hortelano, who notes that the basic principle for polyurethane chemistry was invented in 1937 in the research laboratories of Bayer AG by Dr. Otto Bayer. "Polyurethane chemistry is used in many of the products that touch our lives each day. One of the takeaways from this tutorial is how versatile polyurethane coatings are - in their chemistry, in their application and in their application potential."
