Bayer MaterialScience's Baytec® SPR 092A Thick Film Coating System Earns Potable Water Compliance Rating

Baytec® SPR 092A spray system well-suited for use in potable, wastewater and sanitation infrastructure

PITTSBURGH, October 15, 2007 - Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) LLC reports that its Baytec® SPR 092A polyurethane hybrid thick film coating system has passed the NSF-61 standard, making it a good fit for potable water applications.

NSF International, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, is the world leader in standards development, product certification, education, and risk-management for public health and safety. The NSF-61 standard certifies that a product complies with the health effects requirements for materials designed for contact with potable water.

Manholes, digester tanks and concrete piping are under constant attack from sulfuric acid, which is secreted by a variety of bacteria that colonize on the walls of these wastewater structures. This quickly causes corrosion of exposed concrete and metal surfaces. However, the Baytec SPR 092A spray system, which has a Shore A hardness of 92, is impervious to acids and effluent. The spray system effectively separates the acid from the surface that could be attacked, making it ideal for protecting water and wastewater infrastructure.

"BMS' family of Baytec SPR polyurethane elastomeric spray systems have been utilized in the field for more than 30 years and are approved for use in industrial applications by a variety of federal, state and local authorities, as well as civil engineering and consulting firms," said Dr. Michael Hurley, senior scientist. "Securing NSF-61 certification for our Baytec SPR 092A thick film coating system is the perfect example of Bayer proactively responding to the needs of the marketplace."
