Battery Protection IC provides over-current detection.
Press Release Summary:
S-8243A/B Series incorporates battery protection circuits, battery monitor amp, and voltage regulator, reducing board space requirements. 3-serial and 4-serial cell LI-ION ICs have 3 levels of detection: over-charge (+/- 25 mV), over-discharge (+/- 80 mV) and over-current (+/- 25 mV). Applications include notebook computers, hand-held scanners, and other portable electronic devices that use lithium-ion rechargeable battery packs.

Seiko Announces 3- & 4-Cell Battery Protection ICs With 3 Levels Of Over-Current Detection
Torrance, CA, February 26, 2002. Seiko Instruments breaks new ground again, introducing the first 3-serial and 4-serial cell LI-ION Battery Protection ICs (BPIC) with three levels of over-current detection. The S-8243A/B Series incorporates high-accuracy battery protection circuits, a battery monitor amp and a voltage regulator, therefore decreasing external component count and reducing board space by 50%. Seiko's S-8243 BPIC has superior accuracy for over-charge (± 25 mV), over-discharge (± 80 mV) and over-current 1 (± 25 mV) detection voltages. Applications for the S-8243 include notebook computers, hand-held scanners, and other portable electronic devices that use lithium-ion rechargeable battery packs.
Keeping with Seiko's requirement that all products be low current, the S-8243 consumes only 120 micro A while operating and only 0.1 ,micro A in power-down mode. Housed in a 16-pin TSSOP package, the S-8243 measures only 5.1 mm by 6.4 mm and 11 mm tall. The S-8243A is designed for three-cell applications and the S-8243B for four-cell applications.
The S-8243 Series is available now and is priced at $1.50 each in quantities of 10,000 through a national network of authorized distributors, including All American and Mouser. Samples are available for some versions in the series.
