Smart Battery Charger Operates with or without Host SMBus Controller

MILPITAS, CA - October 21, 2003 - Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC4100, a precision smart battery charger controller that operates with or without a host microcontroller. The LTC4100 operates independent of a host IC and reducing design time and complexity by eliminating the need for writing and debugging firmware. The IC is 100% compliant with Rev. 1.1 SMBus specifications and meets the requirements of Smart Battery System (SBS) Level 2 charging functions. It charges 6.4V to 26V multiple-cell Li-Ion and Nickel-chemistry batteries at up to 4A with 0.8% voltage accuracy and 5% current accuracy, respectively. Synchronous switching operation provides high efficiency constant-current/constant-voltage charging from a wide input supply voltage range of 6V to 28V. To minimize SMBus timing errors due to bus capacitance and noise, the LTC4100 features a patented SMBus Acceleratorä and a high-noise immunity SafetySignal sensor. The LTC4100 is housed in a small 24-pin SSOP and is ideal for use in portable computers and instruments, RAID systems and battery backup in telecom equipment.

The LTC4100 integrates both 10-bit DACs for charge current and an 11-bit DAC for charge voltage programming, respectively. With the charger's input current limit function, maximum charge rate is achieved without overloading the input supply such as a wall adapter. The LTC4100 automatically monitors battery temperature, connectivity and battery type information. The SMBus interface remains alive when the input power is removed and responds to all SMBus activity directed to it including SafetySignal status, which monitors the battery temperature, connectivity and battery type information.

The LTC4100 is rated for operation from -40°C to 85°C. Pricing starts at $5.00 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
