Batch Oven Used for Hydrogen Embrittlement in the Automotive Industry

Wisconsin Oven designed and manufactured a gas fired batch oven for a supplier of specialty tubing and bar products. The industrial oven is being used for hydrogen embrittlement of steel rods for the automotive industry. The batch oven has four (4) zones and a load capacity to heat 3,000 pounds of steel. The heat treating oven has chamber dimensions of 6'6" wide x 28'0" long x 6'0" high, a maximum operating temperature of 500º F and normal operating temperature of 430° F.

The heat treating oven is constructed with 4" thick tongue and groove panel assemblies and 20 gauge aluminized steel interiors and ductwork. The heating system features an industrial 850,000 BTU per hour air heat burner which includes a motorized gas control valve, flame detector and flame relay with alarm horn. The recirculation system has two (2) 6,000 CFM @ 15 HP blowers, and utilizes combination airflow to maximize heating rates and temperature uniformity.

The batch oven is AMS2750D compliant and required a 15-point temperature uniformity of +/-20° F at 430° F. The heat treating oven has a NEMA 12 control enclosure with IEC style motor starters, push buttons, and pilot lights. The temperature for the industrial batch oven is controlled by a Honeywell UDC2500 programmable controller with auto-tune.
