BASF to Showcase Innovative Solutions for the Power Industry at POWER-GEN International 2009

ISELIN, NJ, - BASF will showcase technologies and services to help the power industry overcome construction challenges, improve operating efficiencies and meet environmental regulations at POWER-GEN International 2009, booth C5-213. More than 18,000 people are expected to attend this industry conference on Dec. 8-10 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

New, patented NOxCAT(TM) AD Series 300 catalysts Among the technologies BASF will showcase at the POWER-GEN conference are its patented NOxCAT AD Series 300 catalysts, which have been designed to control NH3 (ammonia), and NOx (nitrogen oxides) plus CO (carbon monoxide) emissions for natural gas turbine and stationary engine applications. Also on display will be BASF's NOxCAT AD Series 100 ammonia destruction catalysts - which reduce ammonia and NOx for gas turbines and stationary engines - and its NOxCAT AD Series 200 catalysts for coal applications. The NOxCAT AD Series 200 catalysts have been tested on a bituminous coal-fired power plant slip stream, revealing high levels of ammonia conversion to N2 (nitrogen) and H2O (water) with the conversion of SO2 (sulfur dioxide) to SO3 (sulfur trioxide) within the error of measurement. NOxCAT AD Series 200 catalysts are also able to control NOx emissions.

TBC techniques can improve life expectancy of turbine components BASF has developed best practices for applying thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) to complex turbine components that can help improve life expectancy.

BASF uses state-of-the-art equipment and computers to calibrate and monitor its TBC application processes and achieve consistent thickness and structure specifications. The company has found that with modern techniques, proper thickness and structure can be consistently maintained on virtually all surfaces.

"Some of our customers have even found that life expectancies increase as control tightens - even if it is within 'spec'. So it is critical that manufacturers select a coater with state-of-the-art process control," said Peter Ruggiero, Commercial Manager of Surface Technologies at BASF Catalysts.
