BASF's Copper Chabazite Zeolite Catalyst Invention Wins 2010 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award


ISELIN, NJ - The Research and Development Council of New Jersey has awarded a team of BASF catalyst inventors with the prestigious "2010 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award" for outstanding environmental contributions at a ceremony held last evening at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The BASF inventors honored at the ceremony include Ivor Bull, Wen-Mei Xue, Patrick Burk, Samuel Boorse, William M. Jaglowski, Gerald S. Koermer, Ahmad Moini, Joseph A. Patchett, Joseph C. Dettling, and Matthew T. Caudle.

Their invention, the innovative copper chabazite zeolite catalyst, is an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalyst that enables the removal of more than 90 percent of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) from diesel engine exhaust over a wide temperature range, while also providing improved durability compared to earlier catalysts.

This SCR catalyst allows BASF's customers to meet increasingly stringent emission limits for NOx from diesel engines, such as the US 2010 Highway Diesel Rule. The U.S. EPA estimates that 2.6 million tons of smog-causing nitrogen oxide emissions will be reduced each year with the implementation of this regulation.

"The patent was issued on Oct. 13, 2009, and production was started in time for customers to use the solution to meet US 2010 regulations."
