BASF Exhibits at Windpower Conference and Exhibition 2013

Portfolio comprises materials for blades, towers and bases and nacelles

FLORHAM PARK, NJ - BASF will showcase its current portfolio of innovative solutions for the fabrication, installation and maintenance of wind turbines at the Windpower Conference and Exhibition, booth 801, May 6-8, 2013, at McCormick Place convention center, Chicago, Illinois.  

BASF's portfolio for wind power includes products and solutions that allow efficient production and enhanced performance of rotor blades, nacelles, towers and foundations. 

Wind turbine rotor blades: Efficient and versatile processing

BASF will introduce a structural foam based on polyethylene terephthalate (PET).  The new material with the trade name Kerdyn® is high-performance foam supplied in the form of panels that can be used inside rotor blades to provide additional stability.  As core material, PET foams offer exceptionally good mechanical properties and have a wide range of compatibility in terms of processing.  With its ability to withstand very high temperatures and its very good chemical resistance, Kerdyn is extremely well-suited for use in composites.  As part of the spectrum of lightweight materials for composites, high-quality PET foam panels are also in demand in the transportation, marine and building/construction sectors.

Adding to a proven epoxy infusion system built on proprietary latent cure technology offering 30-50 percent reduction in cure cycle times compared to typical epoxy infusion systems available in the market, BASF will introduce a new, epoxy based structural adhesive system: The Baxxodur® 4100 system will consist of Baxxores® ER 4100 adhesive resin and the standard Baxxodur® EC 4110 hardener or alternatively Baxxodur® EC 4105 for fast bonding. With this, and several other new systems, BASF has expanded its portfolio of resin and adhesive systems to meet evolving customer needs for the manufacture of longer and lighter blades with improved productivity.

BASF offers special admixtures for concrete that enable increased workability and rapid strength gain. Fibers can be used to increase strength or reduce steel reinforcement requirements, and DELVO® stabilizing admixtures stabilize concrete mixtures during long hauls often experienced on wind farms.  Masterflow® brand advanced grouting materials for wind turbine foundations support long-term stability even in conditions of severe vibration and cyclical loading with the benefit of rapid strength development to assist in project turnaround.

For offshore installations, MASTERFLOW® 9500 Exagrout offers benefits in terms of extremely high fatigue life and outstanding resistance to wind, weathering and the multitude of load changes that occur. Specialty admixtures and grouts are also offered for the production and secure installation of concrete wind towers.

For towers, BASF's special coating materials provide excellent protection in any environment, as well as enhanced aesthetics.

When it comes to coating rotor blades, resistance to erosion and UV radiation are essential. This protection is provided by the topcoats and supported by the two RELESTWind In-Mold gelcoats from BASF.  The in-mold primer RELEST®Wind Gelcoat transparent can be applied to a film thickness of up to 400 um.  RELEST®Wind ProcessCoat offers all the benefits of an in-mold gelcoat at considerably lower usage. The two-component paint materials are easy to sand and easy to use thanks to a colored hardener component with mixing control function. The integrated UV absorbers in the new generation prevent damage to the substrate from UV light.

Both products are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) compliant and easy to process. RELEST®Wind In-mold gelcoats are only one part of the extensive coatings assortment available from BASF for wind turbine rotor blades.

A wind turbine gearbox is exposed to high and continually varying loads. Emgard® high performance gear oils from BASF ease these loads and minimize wear and micropitting, thus making an essential contribution to reliable wind turbine operation. BASF has also developed products to meet the industry's need for high performance biodegradable hydraulic fluids used for the pitch control under the ProEco® brand name.
