BASF Care Chemicals Integrates Ciba Products New Offerings Provide Robust Customer Portfolio

FLORHAM PARK, NJ, September 22, 2009 - BASF Corporation today announced that the Care Chemicals Home and Personal Care business will be strengthened by the integration of Ciba Corporation. Products from the former Ciba portfolio can be purchased directly from BASF as of Nov. 1.

"Through the combination of BASF and Ciba, we are now able to offer a broader product portfolio and additional technical expertise," said Simon Medley, Group Vice President, Care Chemicals, for BASF in North America.

"This will offer significant benefits to our customers who develop hair care, sun care, skin care, detergents, cleaners and other industrial applications, because the Ciba products complement BASF's existing portfolio."

Specific areas in which the former Ciba products will enhance the existing BASF portfolio include:

Ciba's TINOVIS® rheology modifiers that stabilize and thicken formulations while providing crystal clear gels, will complement BASF's

Luvigel(TM) Advanced, a new multifunctional styling and conditioning cationic rheology modifier that provides conditioning, advanced setting and strong hold.

TINOTEX® fabric softeners will provide comfort enhancement, anti-static and hygiene, delivering comfort and convenience by reducing creasing, allowing for easier ironing and increased absorbency.

Salcare® Liquid Dispersion Polymers that are designed as conditioners and thickeners for hair and skin care applications will build upon BASF's Luvigel(TM) STAR, which enables formulators to develop a broad range of viscosities, from light lotions to thick and rich creams.

MAGNAFLOC® APC performance polymers that provide effective soil management over a broad PH range. These will expand the BASF portfolio, which already includes Inoterra(TM) Surfactant Systems that were launched as an alternative to surfactants containing nonyl phenol ethoxylates(NPEs) in North America.

"We look forward to enhancing our team with technical and marketing expertise from Ciba colleagues and building upon their strengths in sun protection technology," said Gary Dee, Business Director, Home and Personal Care, for BASF. "An example of innovative solutions for customers might be rheology modifiers for liquid laundry detergents, body wash, hair and oral care products."
