Basell's New Adsyl "ST" Sealing Resins Offer Breakthrough Speed and Clarity in BOPP Film Processing

11 Oct 2007

Basell has commercialised a new family of Adsyl polypropylene (PP) sealing resins designed to run on the latest generation of high speed BOPP (bi-oriented polypropylene) production lines.

"Our new grades offer producers of BOPP films an outstanding combination of improved processability and optics, attributes regarded by converters as essential for many BOPP film applications, such as transparent and metallised food packaging." said Michael Möller, marketing manager for Basell's global sealant resins business. "The 'ST" designation in the nomenclature for each new grade - Adsyl 5C30F ST, Adsyl 5C37F ST and 5C39F ST - indicates high speed and high transparency."

Improved production speed and better optics

Customer trials on processing equipment have demonstrated that film made using this new product family can be run at production speeds of up to 420 meters per minute. "This is a considerable improvement in productivity compared to the norm of 300 to 350 meters per minute," said Möller.

A Basell test has also shown that the new product family outperforms standard polypropylene in transparency properties. With a given thickness of the film of 20µm, Adsyl ST resins achieved a level of transparency nearly 25% higher than a film made out of conventional polypropylene. Also, in customer trials, films made from Adsyl ST resins had fewer surface defects and a better thickness profile, qualities that contribute to reducing production downtimes.

"The properties of these new grades' set a new standard within the class of 105°C sealing-layer PP materials, enabled by Basell's proprietary Catalloy production technology," said Caroline Cathelin, project manager for European sealant resins. Polymers based on the Catalloy process allow tailor-made modifications to film requirements such as transparency, stiffness, sealing window properties combined with excellent processability. This flexibility in mechanical and processing properties was not achievable with conventional polypropylene grades.

The new Adsyl ST grades are currently manufactured in Europe and are available for export.
