Basell Launches New Resins at K2007 that Boost Productivity in Customer Packaging Applications

October 22, 2007 - Newly developed Basell PP and PE grades that enable converters to reduce wall thickness and improve productivity in packaging applications will be on display in processing demonstrations at K-2007 in Dusseldorf from October 24 to October 31, 2007.

"Reducing wall-thickness in packaging applications is a key factor for our customers in their competitive markets and was a key reason why we have focused our product development on that design requirement", said Gianluca Brescia, head of Basell's Business Line Polyolefin Solutions. "Due to the higher stiffness that can be achieved with these resins - without the loss of other equally important properties, including impact resistance - tests have shown that customers should be able to reduce the amount of raw material used in their production lines."

Brescia added: "This performance is possible through the special design of the molecular structure provided by the Hostalen ACP multimodal process for producing polyethylene grades and the Spherizone process for producing polypropylene - two of Basell's leading proprietary technologies."

In addition Basell enlarged the property window of its polypropylene portfolio by the use of metallocene catalysts and their application to the production. "By the aid of this catalysts we are able to produce a distinct class of polymers achieving a higher balance of clarity and mechanical performance and characterized by a low level of oligomers and extractables", explains Burkhard Wehefritz, Basell's Marketing Manager for metallocene-based polypropylene resins.

Marketed under the trade names Metocene, Clyrell and Hostalen ACP, the new resins can be used in a wide variety of processing methods.

Metocene HM 1753 is a very high flow homopolymer resin produced with a metallocene catalyst. The polymer is typically used by customers for thin wall injection moulded applications such as cups, lids and closures as well as for compounds and composites.

Clyrell RC514L is a polypropylene grade used by customers for ready meal packaging and fruit and vegetable packaging. It can be processed using extrusion, co-extrusion, and thermoforming conversion methods. Converters of extrusion blow moulded bottles for household chemicals and personal care products will benefit from Hostalen ACP 6031D high density polyethylene resins' ability to demonstrate a high level of interaction between ESCR and stiffness, a key factor to reduce wall thickness.

The new packaging materials will be processed at the K-2007 in the following stands

HM1753 at Arburg, Hall 13/Stand A13

Clyrell RC514L at Bosch Sprang, Hall 3/Stand B73 and at Kiefel, Hall 3/Stand F92
Hostalen ACP 6031D at Kautex Maschinenbau Hall 14/A18 and at Bekum Hall14/StandC04
