BARIX Combines Building Systems Control Technology with IP Telephony

ZURICH, Switzerland, August 10 - The HSR Hochschule fur Technik Rapperswil, in a collaboration with Barix, has implemented SIP functionality into the IP Intercom Annuncicom device for use with the popular Cisco CallManager and Asterisk telephone systems. This development opens up a broad range of use for the Annuncicom device, particularly for use with complex intercom and paging applications, as both parties can communicate over a single line. Applications include Audio distribution, bi-directional communication for emergency telephones or access controls, security applications for alerting and controlling devices, and management of door contacts (intercom functions and operating the door opener).

Alongside audio distribution the Annuncicom can send messages and announcements from any telephone quickly and easily into large halls, public buildings, open air grounds, and university campuses. One practical use that has already proven successful is the audio distribution into a package sorting hall. This allows for employees to make announcements or to page individuals or selected zones from any phone, including an external mobile phone.

In the area of bidirectional communication, the Annuncicom can be integrated into existing alarm system designs using Cisco and SIP telephones.
Typical applications include outdoor locations where the use of normal telephones is not appropriate, such as informational or emergency telephones.
In such applications, the "two-way" functionality enables call-back and conversation from a predefined telephone in a control centre.

The Annuncicom can be used with sensors or actuators primarily in security-related applications in the controlling of devices, such as parking
gates: The visitor presses the talk button and the Annuncicom sends the signal to either one or several SIP telephones connected to the central SIP server. When the call is picked up, the responsible party can open the access gate by entering a security code into the telephone keypad. Certain functions (opening and closing, the restriction of functions to a predefined timeslot) can be predefined. Thus, regulated access control for certifying visitors at the gate is realized.

The wide range of applications can also be seen in another example from the area of alarm systems. By means of its serial interface, the Annuncicom enables the connection to sensors of all types, i.e. a thermometer attached to an emergency phone could be set to trigger an alarm when temperatures fell below or rose above set values, and could forward this alarm signal to a telephone.
