Barco Display Quality Convinces Shin Kong Hospital

Kortrijk, Belgium, 29 November 2010. Shin Kong Hospital, one of Taiwan's biggest private hospitals, has upgraded its PACS system with high-quality Barco medical displays. The hospital's six year-old displays have been replaced with a combination of Coronis Fusion 6MP DL, Nio Fusion 4MP, and MDRC-2120 units. The hospital staff was particularly impressed by Barco's image quality, long lifetime, and first-class after-sales service.

In 2004, a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) was installed in Shin Kong Hospital's Diagnostic Radiology Department, featuring Barco Coronis 5MP displays and a number of non-Barco medical and commercial displays. In 2009, the hospital staff noticed that only the Barco displays had passed the test of time and were still producing high-quality images. So, Dr. Liang-Kuang Chen, the hospital's chief radiologist, looked at Barco's portfolio first to upgrade the PACS imaging system.

Barco suggested a new configuration, centered around the Coronis Fusion 6MP DL. "I am very impressed by the Coronis Fusion 6MP DL," said Dr. Liang-Kuang Chen. "The image quality, brightness and contrast ratio are excellent for multi-modality viewing, allowing us to read chest x-rays, CT and MR images. Furthermore, it is very convenient for us to view both gray-scale and color images on just one screen."

Shin Kong Hospital decided to purchase a combination of Coronis Fusion 6MP DL, Nio Fusion 4MP and MDRC-2120 displays, which were all installed in Q1 2010. This upgraded system provides the radiology department with unequalled image quality and optimized brightness and contrast levels on all displays. The portfolio of three different models gives the radiology professionals the flexibility to use the display most suited for the job, from day-to-day use through to highly specialized diagnosis.

The real power of Barco's Coronis Fusion 6MP DL became clear during the evaluation process, when a patient suffering from a kidney stone was brought in. The displays in use at the time failed to locate the stone, so Dr. Chen suggested reading the case on the Barco Fusion 6MP which was on-site for the evaluation. This high-quality display showed the kidney stone quite clearly, which greatly impressed the whole radiology department - and the hospital's management. The choice for Barco was made soon afterward.
