Zebra Technologies Showcases Industry's First Internal Wireless Networking for Tabletop Label Printers

ZebraNet® Wireless Card Socket Allows Industrial Networking with Multi-Card Compatibility

VERNON HILLS, Ill., June 4, 2002-For manufacturers, the time it takes to relocate and reconnect networked bar code label printers can mean the difference between meeting shipping deadlines and wasting hours of downtime. Now, Zebra Technologies, the worldwide leader in bar code printing, has a solution-the ZebraNet® Wireless Card Socket. With internal integration, simple configuration, and upgrade flexibility, Zebra has simplified setup, management, and monitoring of printer products for its customers.

The industry's first RF option for tabletop bar code printers, the ZebraNet Wireless Card Socket, makes it easy to configure Zebra's high-performance XiIII(TM) Series printers on 802.11 b or Symbol Spectrum 24(TM) wireless Ethernet networks. This option is compatible with radio LAN cards (PCMCIA format) from all major manufacturers, including Lucent Technologies, Symbol Technologies and Cisco Systems. Ideal for manufacturing, warehouse, and distribution applications, the ZebraNet Wireless Card Socket provides system administrators with the flexibility to move printers to any location within a facility with ease-avoiding typical reconfiguration hassles, unproductive downtime, and, most importantly, additional cost.

"Zebra's wireless card socket revolutionizes the way tabletop bar code printers are configured," said Matt Banach, Zebra product manager for wireless networking systems. "End users no longer have to deal with the hassles of reconfiguring their networks when moving a manufacturing line or relocating printers. Our customers can move their tabletop bar code printers to any location within their facilities-without downtime."

The ZebraNet Wireless Card Socket's internal integration eliminates the need for a bulky wireless bridge and an external power supply; it also supports a wide range of networking protocols. This networking accessory is field-upgradeable, allowing users the flexibility to change cards if the company's wireless network configuration changes. In addition, the wireless card socket includes a comprehensive administration and configuration software package.

As an added benefit, users can now take advantage of the wireless card socket's Java utility. This Java utility is designed to automate setup from a Microsoft® Windows® or UNIX® computer by locating new printers on the wireless network as well as assigning each an IP address-all from a standard Web browser.

"Enhanced connectivity, including internal Ethernet and RF networking, is the next phase in the evolution of bar code label printing," said Jeff Kaufman, Zebra's director of networking and software group. "Zebra is proud to be the leader in bar code printer networking with our extensive connectivity options. Now more than ever, systems administrators can easily install, manage and monitor Zebra printers attached to a network via multiple protocols."

Zebra introduced the company's new connectivity suite featuring the wireless card socket at Frontline Expo 2001. The wireless card socket is currently available for Xi(TM) Series high-performance printers and the R-140(TM) RFID printer/encoder.

To see the ZebraNet Wireless Card Socket in action, drop by Booth #2421 at the MD&M show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. To set up a discussion with a Zebra professional, please call Zebra at 1-800-423-0442.
