Backplane Connectors feature surface-mount design.

Press Release Summary:

Shielded and grounded, Sub-SMT(TM) Connectors feature 0.5 mm diameter plated holes that are 0.5 mm deep. Units employ short pin stubs that fit into solder paste-filled blind vias. After pick-and-place mounting of header, daughter card pin stubs are soldered directly into surface blind vias, providing least amount of crosstalk for connection.

New 'Sub-SMT(TM)' Technology Reduces Backplane Connector Footprint

SANTA ANA, CA (February 3, 2004) - Improving upon its existing backplane connector design, ITT Industries, Cannon has developed a new surface mount backplane technology that reduces footprint while improving signal integrity and data transmission rates. The sub-SMT design reduces footprint to 0.5mm diameter plated holes that are 0.5mm deep. The performance is comparable to connectors that require through vias for mounting and grounding connections. With a specially shielded design and grounding, the connector technology is able to provide thinner signal pins without reducing impedance control.

The new technology does not employ a press-fit connection but rather short pin stubs that fit into solder paste filled blind vias. Assembly of the two-part header and daughter card is simple - after pick-and-place mounting of the header, the daughter card pin stubs are soldered directly into the surface blind vias. This provides the shortest return path and least amount of crosstalk for the connection.
