New CompactPCI Serial Mesh Backplane is the First Available in a Benchtop Development Chassis



COLUMBUS, OH, March 3, 2003-Tracewell Systems, Inc. announces the industry's first test and development chassis for applications using the new CompactPCI Serial Mesh Backplane (CSMB) architecture. This new fabric architecture enables high speed, high performance data transfer in a wide variety of applications including ATM, frame relay, 3G wireless, radio network controllers, and media gateways.

Tracewell's patented T-Frame(TM) test and development system combines unparalleled board access, convenience, diagnostics and monitoring functions with the high-performance specifications of this new advanced Serial Mesh Backplane. System developers can access and monitor installed boards, without performance-robbing
extender cards.

The T-Frame is an 8-slot system providing all the functionality and control of a development chassis with fully compliant Serial Mesh Backplane and the added benefit of open access to test points and in-circuit test devices. T-Frame with Serial Mesh
Backplane provides a rugged yet easily portable product that withstands the rigors of engineering development and test. Its open-frame design provides easy access to both front and rear boards for probes and debugging. The unit is 12U high and is mounted on a tilt stand for easier access to plug-in cards, and is the most robust, user-friendy, and thermally effective stand on the market.

Cooling is provided by a 3U lower air chamber with six axial double-bladed fans and a 1U upper air chamber with six axial double bladed fans. This high-performance push-pull cooling system provides proper cooling airflow even with the sides removed, and can handle heat loads of up to 75W per board.

Backplane. The new CompactPCI Serial Mesh Backplane is a high speed serial fabric architecture for CompactPCI platforms with data transfer speeds up to 700Gb/s. Differential serial signals are capable of 1.25Gb/s or 2.5Gb/s. Channels are arranged in a
"Mesh" configuration that gives each slot a full set of interconnects to every other slot. This mesh arrangement supports a distributed switch fabric architecture on the CompactPCI platform with advantages in scalability and traffic management.

The new Serial Mesh standard provides a parallel capability to new PICMG 3.X configurations in the AdvancedTCA architectures. Its purpose is to enhance data communication speeds for high-end applications. This open standard also allows for development of multiple applications on a single platform, while maintaining backward compatibility with existing PICMG standards (2.0, 2.1, 2.9, 2.12, 2.16, 2.17)
