Backhaul Products operate at 30, 60, and 300 Mb.

Press Release Summary:

Operating in near and non line-of-sight environments, Canopy(TM) 5.7 GHz OFDM Backhaul units can interconnect cellular sites, replace leased T1/E1 lines, connect access point clusters, serve as backbone for mesh networks, or link corporate and institutional campuses and remote sites. They include multi-beam space time coding, built-in security protection via complex signal with scrambling, and dynamic frequency selection, which automatically changes channels to avoid interference.

Original Press Release:

Motorola Expands its MOTOwi4(TM) Portfolio with its New 30, 60, 300 Mbps Canopy(TM) OFDM Backhaul Products

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Sept. 19 /-- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) has doubled its MOTOwi4 wireless broadband backhaul portfolio with the addition of three carrier-grade Canopy backhaul products, including a WiMAX compatible point-to-point 300 Megabit solution.

The Canopy OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) backhaul series increases range and point-to-point link reliability and performance. In addition, the backhaul portfolio will include new 30 and 60 Mb solutions. All three OFDM products operate in near line of sight and non line of sight environments.

"Motorola's MOTOwi4 Canopy backhaul solution takes advantage of the increased bandwidth to enable carriers, enterprises and network operators to transmit Internet protocol data, voice over Internet protocol and channelized voice for a myriad of applications," said Tom Gruba, director of marketing for Motorola's Canopy Wireless Broadband business.

Applications can include distance learning initiatives, videoconferencing, connecting remote and underserved locations and linking campuses.

"We have beta tested the 60MB and 300MB backhaul products and they are great complements to the Canopy portfolio because of the increased throughput," said Brian Magnuson, president, Cascade Networks of Longview, Wash. "We are getting more than 260Mb of throughput that we can divide into a 50/50 or 67/33 downlink/uplink configuration. In addition, the 30 and 60Mb products do very well in non line-of-sight environments."

The Canopy 5.7 GigaHertz backhaul solutions can interconnect cellular sites, replace leased T1/E1 lines, connect Canopy access point clusters, serve as a backbone for mesh networks or link corporate and institutional campuses and remote sites.

Additionally, Canopy backhaul solutions feature:
-- Dynamic frequency selection, which automatically changes channels to avoid interference and combat link fading without user intervention,
-- Adaptive modulation to ensure maximum throughput optimized for the radio path even as path characteristics change,
-- Built-in security protection via a complex proprietary signal with scrambling applied,
-- Multi-beam space time coding, which transmits two redundant signals spaced in time to bring multi-path signals into phase, resulting in better performance and link availability,
-- Long-range line of sight capabilities that reduce the number of hops to establish a robust link.

"These point-to-point links are critical to enabling the deployment and business case behind the MOTOwi4 wireless access solutions, including WiMAX, Metro WiFi and today's Canopy solution with greater Internet protocol bandwidth and better price points than wired backhaul solutions," said Gruba.
