B & D Plastics Moves a 20,000 Pound Giant Chemical Storage Tank from Ocean Springs Mississippi to Texas

B & D Plastics LLC manufactured a 56,000 gallon, 20,000 pound, 20 feet high, 27 feet wide chemical storage tank in their Ocean Springs Mississippi manufacturing plant and transported it to a water front location on Fort Bayou where it would be loaded onto a barge.

The tanker's eventual destination is a company in Texas. But reaching the water required a tricky transport down a road, highway and interstate.

"We're moving this from our facility to a location on Ocean Springs Road," explained company manager Tom Reeves, as the massive tanker made its slow move down Allen Road.

It's just a two mile trip, but this is one wide load.

"Well, the road is 21 foot across it, and the thing is 27 foot wide," said Mike Wood, who was one of the helpers on the transport job.

The "thing" is a 56,000 gallon chemical storage tank.

As police cleared traffic, power company crews dealt with overhead lines.

"We had to lift a lot of power lines on Allen Road," said Reeves.

Mike Wood's team pulls signs that would be clipped by the tanker.

"We're just trying to help them out and move signs and stuff for them. Help them keep the road straight and clear," said Wood.

Following the successful journey down a winding Allen Road, the team re-grouped at I-10.

"We need to come up with which one we're going to," said a Highway Patrolman, who conferred with the group about the interstate escort.

"Well, I know I can turn and get out of this first one, which is two miles up the road," said truck driver Donald Findley.

"Everything's going better than expected, and we're actually ahead of schedule at this point," said Reeves.

The tanker rolled up the I-10 ramp with a highway patrol escort. The brief trip down the interstate allowed the driver to turn around before exiting on southbound Highway 57.

Obviously, it takes a team effort to move something this massive. But much of the credit goes to the driver, who says he's not bothered by wide loads. It's the tall loads that can be troublesome.

And in this case, he had both.

"I hate high. Wide is fine. Overweight and long is good. But high is rough," said Findley.

But the trucker makes it look easy, as he maneuvers the wide, tall tanker across a ditch, positioning it beneath the waiting crane.

At last, the company manager could breathe easier.

"We thought this would be the trickiest part," said Reeves. "It all went without a hitch. The driver did a good job. And it's in there, ready to load on the barge."

It will be about a four day trip on the water, to its final destination, a company in Texas.
