Fujitsu Graphics SoC Sets New Performance Standard for Automotive Cluster, Navigation, Information Display, and Multimedia Applications

MB86R11 Integrates Graphics and Central Processors with Support for Fujitsu 360-Degree Wraparound Video Imaging Technology

SUNNYVALE, Calif., -- Fujitsu Semiconductor America, Inc. (FSA) today introduced the Fujitsu MB86R11 2D/3D Graphics System-on-a-Chip (SoC) with an integrated GDC and GPU. The SoC provides sophisticated graphics and effects for the most demanding instrument cluster and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The high-performance design of the MB86R11 makes it the ideal graphics SoC for deployment with the newly announced Fujitsu 360-Degree Wrap-Around Video Imaging Technology (http://www.fujitsu.com/us/news/pr/fma_20101019-01.html).

The Fujitsu MB86R11 "Emerald-L" packs considerable graphical processing power and functionality into a compact 544-ball PBGA package. Based on the 400MHz ARM Cortex(TM) A9 processor and a powerful custom graphics core, the SoC delivers leading-edge two- and three-dimensional graphics. The graphics core, which is OpenGL 2.0-compliant(1), features a unified shader array and 16 parallel floating point units. Three independent display controller units (DCUs) built into the graphics core support up to five displays total and four independent video-capture inputs. The MB86R11 "Emerald-L" graphics SoC also incorporates a memory controller, power management unit, and a wide range of peripheral and high-speed interfaces.

"The MB86R11 'Emerald-L' represents highly innovative, efficient, and integrated graphics system-on-a-chip technology for advanced automotive applications," said Dan Landeck, senior manager for marketing at Fujitsu Semiconductor America. "It builds upon the popular and successful Fujitsu MB86298 'Ruby' graphics processor, which was the first to provide four displays and four video inputs on a single IC. The unique combination of an OpenGL ES 2.0 GPU and Fujitsu's powerful display controller technology enables the MB86R11 'Emerald-L' to deliver stunning 2D/3D graphics performance."

Superior Graphics Quality with Minimal Processing Overhead and Memory Access

Since 2D technology efficiently produces many common graphical effects, a proprietary, highly optimized 2D core complements the shader architecture. This 2D engine, which includes Fujitsu's new PixBlt unit, can process selected graphics without using the GPU. The PixBlt unit offers a variety of functions related to blending, anti-aliasing, and many levels of filtering. By offloading less complex graphics tasks from the GPU to the 2D engine, the MB86R11 design enables superior graphics quality while minimizing processing overhead and memory access. This highly efficient design reduces power consumption and allows the chip to run optimally without the need for active or passive cooling.

The unified shader array of the MB86R11 supports vertex and fragment shaders. The pipeline allows for OpenGL ES 2.0-compliant graphics and drawing features such as anti-aliased graphical object drawing. The array incorporates 16- and 32-bit pixel color formats, a 32-bit pixel format frame buffer, and textures for RGBA, ARGB, and ABGR color ordering. A "visibility enhancement" feature performs adjacent pixel comparison to reproduce images with natural colors and fine detail. A flexible graphics "signature" unit offers automotive system developers a powerful and efficient method for verifying data integrity.

The MB86R11 supports up to 1GB of 32-bit DDR3-800 or DDR2-800 memory and uses a unified memory architecture that allows seamless access to the memory by the processor core and graphics engine. This enables the MB86R11 to provide a maximum memory performance of 3.2GB/second. The SoC's flexible power management unit allows the selective disabling and enabling of its core to control its power consumption at specific times. The device also features several low-power standby modes and external memory auto refresh.

Pricing and Availability

The MB86R11 is available in a compact 544-ball PBGA package. Samples are available now at $39.00 each.
