Automotive-Grade Step-Down Converters consume 25 µA at no load.

Press Release Summary:

Models MAX16903 and MAX16904 synchronous step-down converters deliver 1 A and 600 mA, respectively. Both 2.1 MHz units operate from 3.5-28 V and tolerate load-dump transients up to 42 V and cold-crank excursions down to 3.5 V. Integrating high- and low-side FETs, they do not need external Schottky diode, and have open-drain, power-good output to ease power-supply sequencing. Converters operate over -40 to +125°C temperature range and include overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown.

Original Press Release:

2.1 MHz Automotive Step-Down Converters Consume only 25 microamps

o The MAX16903/MAX16904 are 42V-tolerant, 2.1MHz, synchronous step-down converters that use only 25microamps (no load) of quiescent current and deliver 1A and 600mA, respectively.

o The integration of both the high- and low-side FETs enable the devices to operate without an external Schottky diode, thus saving cost and board space while improving efficiency.

o The devices are capable of running at high duty cycle during supply-voltage transients to operate during cold-crank and start/stop conditions.

o The MAX16903/MAX16904 are well suited for automotive and industrial applications demanding high performance.

Maxim's new high-voltage buck converters conserve battery life in automotive applications while providing load-dump and cold-crank compliance.

SUNNYVALE, CA - Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX16903/MAX16904, automotive-grade, synchronous step-down converters that consume only 25microamps (no load) and deliver 1A and 600mA, respectively. These 2.1MHz step-down converters are optimized for operation over the 3.5V to 28V range. Designed to withstand the extreme battery-voltage conditions in automotive applications, the MAX16903/MAX16904 tolerate load-dump transients up to 42V and cold-crank excursions down to 3.5V. The devices are capable of running at high duty cycle to maintain a steady output voltage during cold-crank and start/stop conditions. This wide-ranging tolerance combined with the devices' ultra-low quiescent current makes the MAX16903/MAX16904 ideal for automotive applications.

The MAX16903/MAX16904 integrate high- and low-side FETs to eliminate the need for an external Schottky diode, thus saving both space and cost while improving power efficiency. Additionally, this architecture enables the devices to operate in skip mode for lower current consumption or in forced PWM mode for improved EMI performance. They have an open-drain, power-good output to ease power-supply sequencing. Protection features include overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown.

The MAX16903/MAX16904 are fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +125 degrees Celsius automotive temperature range. They are AEC-Q100 qualified and available in thermally enhanced, 16-pin TSSOP and 10-pin TDFN packages. Pricing starts at $2.96 (1000-up, FOB USA).
