Original Press Release:

The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Automated Tape Library 3494 Delivers Availability Enhancements and Now Supports New WORM and Short Media

Overview

The IBM TotalStorage® Enterprise Automated Tape Library 3494 is enhanced to support the IBM TotalStorage Master Console (TSMC) which integrates service monitoring of the 3494 library. Remote data monitoring of devices attached to the master console may assist in determining if the 3494 is working properly and providing rapid diagnostic support.

In addition, the 3494 now supports new IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 media when used in conjunction with the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A. New 3592 cartridges announced today include a 300 GB WORM Cartridge, 60 GB WORM Cartridge, and an Economy short-length (60 GB) rewritable cartridge. These are in addition to the previously announced 300 GB rewritable cartridge.

Write once read many (WORM) data cartridges provide nonalterable, nonrewritable tape media for long-term records retention. When the 3592 Model J1A tape drive detects a WORM cartridge, the tape drive is designed to prevent overwrite or changes to existing customer data. New data can be appended to existing data until the cartridge capacity is reached. WORM Cartridges are available in two sizes, 300 GB or 60 GB native capacity. These new media types are reported to the host by 3592 Model J1A Tape drives and/or controllers. WORM and rewritable tape cartridges in both sizes can be intermixed in the same 3494 Tape Library.

This new media offers customers unsurpassed flexibility to meet their performance, capacity, and data security requirements.
