National Semiconductor Introduces Industry's Lowest Distortion, High-Fidelity Audio Op Amps

44V and 34V LME Device Families Provide Highest Linearity and Unprecedented 0.00003 Percent Distortion Rate

July 23, 2007 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today introduced two LME(TM) families of high-fidelity audio operational amplifiers (op amps) that practically eliminate distortion, with total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) of 0.00003 percent. This record low THD+N figure - the result of highly linear behavior - enables high-end audio manufacturers to produce systems with cleaner, "true to the original recording" sound quality.

National's 44V audio op amp family includes two package versions of the LME49860 dual, while the 34V family consists of the LME49710 single, LME49720 dual and the LME49740 quad op amps. They join the multiple award-winning 34V LM4562 dual, high-fidelity audio op amp as the newest members of National's high-performance audio family. Together they provide audio system designers the highest level of performance, multiple package options and a wide operating voltage range up to plus or minus 22V. In a related announcement today, National introduced the industry's first monolithic 200V audio power amplifier driver with an integrated Baker Clamp (LME49810).

National's high-performance audio op amps offer remarkably low distortion, low noise, high speed and high output drive. These features make the op amps well-suited for audio/visual (AV) receivers, preamplifiers and mixers, as well as home automation and distribution, speakers, monitors and subwoofers. They also are ideal for a wide range of demanding non-audio applications including ultrasound, test and measurement, industrial automation and security.

The 34V and 44V audio op amps offer the key specifications required for superior audio performance and signal conditioning, including low-input noise density of 2.7 nV/sqrt Hz, a 1/f noise corner of 60 Hz and 600-Ohm output drive. To ensure that the most challenging loads are driven without any compromise, these op amps offer a slew rate of 20 V/us and a 55 MHz gain bandwidth. National's new op amps add to the company's expanding portfolio of high-performance audio conditioning and power amplifier ICs - including the LM4702 and LME49810 power amplifier drivers - to deliver a complete audio signal-path solution.

Key Technical Features - 44V Audio Op Amps

The LME49860 is unity-gain stable over a wide supply range of plus or minus 2.5V to 22V and provides output current capability of 26 mA. Over this supply range, the amplifier maintains a common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) and power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of more than 120 db and a typical low input bias current of 10 nA. The LME49860 offers a full audio dynamic range maximized with an output stage that can swing to within 1V of either power supply voltage when driving 2-kiloOhm loads or to within 1.5V when driving 600-Ohm loads. The LME49860 retains its high performance while driving capacitive loads as high as 100 pF. It also features thermal shutdown and output short-circuit protection. The LME49860 is available in 8-lead narrow body SOIC and DIP packages. A 44V single op amp will be available in Q3 2007.

Key Technical Features - 34V Audio Op Amps

The LME49710, LME49720 and LME49740 amplifiers are unity-gain stable over a wide supply range of plus or minus 2.5V to 17V and provide output current capability of 45 mA. The LME49710 single and LME49720 dual are available in 8-lead narrow body SOIC, dual in-line (DIP) and metal can TO-99 packages. The LME49740 quad is available in 14-lead narrow body SOIC and DIP packages.

Pricing and Availability

Available now and priced in 100-unit quantities, the LME49860 dual is priced at $3.36, the LME49710 single is $1.35 and the LME49710's metal can package is $6.92, the LME49720 dual is $2.69 and the LME49720's metal can package is $10.60, and the LME49740 quad is $5.38.
