Siemens Dematic Introduces Gripper Technology for Miniload AS/RS

Gripper handles totes and cartons directly without using trays to maximize rack space and more efficiently, flexibly and accurately stage product.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI-(October 29, 2002)-Siemens Dematic, Rapistan Material Handling Automation Division, introduces the Miniload Automated Storage/Retrieval System (AS/RS) with gripper technology which allows direct load handling without using load handling units such as trays or bins. Totes and cartons can now be stored with minimal gaps between each other allowing for compact system dimensions. Eliminating totes in narrow aisle configurations enables customers to significantly reduce system footprint, associated investment costs and inventory costs.

The gripper gently handles a large variety of sizes and styles of cartons and totes and can be easily applied to full case and split case picking operations. Typical applications include distribution centers and manufacturing facilities. Single or double deep storage configurations are available. Vacuum devices can be added to the gripper for cartons with variable dimensions and properties.

According to Roger Stubbs, AS/RS Product Manager, "The advanced
gripper technology accommodates cartons and totes efficiently because it directly handles the product without using trays. This way our customers can save valuable storage space and eliminate the costs associated with trays."
