Innovative 3U VPX ARM-Based Single Board Computer Offered for Cost-Free Evaluation by Curtiss-Wright

New rugged VPX SBC is first to address demand for low-cost, low-power ARM processing for Defense/Aerospace COTS Market

ASHBURN, Va. — Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that its Defense Solutions division is offering its new cutting-edge ARM®-based COTS VPX3-1701 3U VPX single board computer (SBC) for evaluation at no-cost to select, qualified system developers. Purpose-built for size, weight, and power (SWaP)-constrained defense and aerospace applications, the VPX3-1701 is the industry’s first VPX COTS processing module to combine the excellent compute performance and low power advantages of the ARM architecture. Featuring Freescale™’s QorIQ™ LayerScape LS1020A processor operating at 1.0 GHz with highly integrated dual ARM Cortex-A7 processors, this cost-effective small form factor SBC is rated at less than 15W maximum power dissipation. The VPX3-1701 leads the way as Curtiss-Wright’s most affordable and best performance/watt SBC. It also provides uncompromising full-featured connectivity and I/O options. Even better, the VPX3-1701 delivers the benefits of ARM technology to system designers today. This speeds the development of ARM-based system solutions while providing a path to technology insertion for Curtiss-Wright’s forthcoming higher performance, pin compatible ARM SBCs as they become available.

“System designers will be delighted by the performance and low-power benefits that ARM-based processing brings to rugged COTS computing,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Defense Solutions division. “Our 3U VPX VPX3-1701 single board computer delivers an unprecedented combination of affordability and performance-per-watt to deployed systems.”

About the VPX3-1701

The VPX3-1701’s outstanding processing capabilities are ideal for managing data from high speed I/O interface cards such as the Curtiss-Wright XF07 and VPX3-530 modules. When paired with Curtiss-Wright’s XMC-715 graphics module, the VPX3-1701 provides an industry-leading graphics solution in a compact, low powered footprint. For demanding C4ISR applications such as video, radar and sonar data processing, the VPX3-1701 is ideal for handing the acquisition, processing and distribution of sensor data. Its integral high speed backplane and XMC connectivity enables multi-GB/s data flows both from board-to-board via the backplane interface and from the backplane to its on-board XMC site.

Compact and lightweight, the VPX-1701 is also ideal for technology refresh applications. Its small form factor provides similar I/O interfaces and pin-compatibility with a range of popular Curtiss-Wright 3U VPX SBCs, including the Power Architecture®-based VPX3-131 and VPX3-133 and the Intel®-based VPX3-1257. For customers looking to upgrade to VPX from legacy CompactPCI® (cPCI)-based systems, the VPX3-1701 delivers contemporary compute bandwidth and I/O performance for similar cost and power requirements.

The evaluation VPX3-1701 ships with a Linux Board Support Package (BSP). There are also options for supporting Sysgo’s PikeOS™ and Wind River®’s VxWorks® operating systems.
