Architects for Boeing 787 Dreamliner Plant Win Veelda Award for Visually Energy-Efficient Retrofit Lighting Design

Melbourne, FL - BRPH Companies Inc., an international architecture, engineering and construction services organization founded in 1964, has won the first non-governmental VEELDA Award for A Visually Energy-Efficient Lighting Design project. The award is for the initial solar street lighting and grid powered airplane area ramplighting projects in North Charleston, South Carolina.

BRPH provided architecture and design services to the Boeing Company, and construction services with joint-venture partners Turner Construction and BE&K Building Group.

Recipients of the VEELDA Award were Daniel Spradling, Director of Electrical Engineering for BRPH Companies, Inc., and Joseph Oppold, Senior Electrical Engineer. Mr. Oppold worked closely with management at Magnaray® International, an energy-conserving outdoor lighting manufacturing specialist headquartered in Bradenton, Florida, to adapt special "stacked arrays" of high-output, low energy pole-mounted twin T5 linear fluorescent longlife luminaires to their particular applications at Boeing. Larry Leetzow, IES, Lighting Consultant and president at the World Institute of Lighting and Development Corporation, presented the award to BRPH recipients.

The Magnaray® lighting system saves a computed 75% in energy costs for Boeing, compared against metal halide or high-pressure sodium luminaires performing the same tasks. They maintain 90% lumen maintenance at 90% of newly rated lamplife of 50,000 hours, and 300% less required maintenance compared with MH luminaires. Fifty-six lighting poles each hold two stacked arrays of twin T5 lamped luminaires. The 4 luminaire main array units are mounted at 229 AFF, and consume 828 watts of "instant on" energy. The original design called for 3,300 watt of metal halide.

A second stacked array of 2 luminaires, at 159 mounting height is for general and emergency backup lighting in case of power outages. These arrays lower emergency generator cost and consume 424 watts. Lighting is instantaneous during an outage until power returns. With linear fluorescent emergency backup lighting, during a power outage there is no restriking required, just instant-on power, no shift in light color, producing high-color-rendering white light.

A single VEELDA Award is presented after judging of submittals annually by the board of directors of the World Institute of Lighting and Development Corporation.
