Aquatech to Provide Evaporator Technology for JACOS Hangingstone Oil Sands Project in Alberta

CANONSBURG, Pa. - Aquatech, a global leader in water treatment solutions for the oil & gas market, has been awarded a contract to provide its evaporator technology for the JACOS (Japan Canada Oil Sands Ltd.) Hangingstone Expansion Project in Alberta, Canada.

Aquatech's Vertical Tube Falling Film (VTFF) evaporator technology will be used to treat and recover over 95% of the OTSG (Once-Through Steam Generator) blowdown to supply as boiler feedwater make-up for JACOS' heavy oil production facility.

The Hangingstone Project, which is located approximately 50 km southwest of Ft. McMurray, Alberta, is a joint venture of JACOS and Nexen Energy ULC, a wholly owned subsidiary of CNOOC Limited. The bitumen production capacity during the initial stage will be approximately 20,000 barrels per day.

"The Alberta Oil Sands is a very important market to Aquatech – one in which we have invested a great amount of attention and resources. We are now seeing tremendous momentum in the SAGD market by listening carefully to the industry, understanding our clients' needs, and swiftly making adjustments to provide an optimal value proposition," said Matt Sonnenberg, Regional Sales Manager, Western Canada.

Alan Daza, Vice President of Upstream Oil & Gas, added, "This is another important win for Aquatech as we see a market potential for evaporation technology to meet the recycle/reuse objectives of Directive 081 for the Oil Sands in the province of Alberta. In addition, we are excited to have the opportunity to incorporate enhanced design and operational features for this installation that are derived from our experience in providing the single largest such evaporator systems in the world for oil field produced water treatment."

SAGD, or Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage technology, is an enhanced oil recovery process used for producing heavy crude oil or bitumen. Aquatech's portfolio of solutions for the Oil Sands market includes:

SmartMOD® - a modular evaporator system that is more compact than conventional evaporators. This innovative design helps lower installation costs, improves ease of operation and significantly reduces the overall project schedule, allowing the system to be fully operational approximately six weeks from arriving onsite, unlike other conventional systems that take up to six months. SmartMOD modular evaporator system is an approach to provide the Oil Sands market definitive cost and schedule certainty on these projects.

The patented HEVAP™ high efficiency evaporation process for treating produced water from oil sands thermal processes such as SAGD. The HEVAP evaporative process pre-conditions the feedwater by incorporating a softening step combined with additional conditioning of the feedwater prior to treatment by the evaporators. This process provides the evaporators with essentially a scale free environment in which to operate. HEVAP offers additional advantages that help lower operating expense (OPEX) and life cycle costs (LCC).
