Analog I/O connects via network.

Press Release Summary:

Additions to CompactBlock(TM) LDX I/O include analog and temperature blocks, plus networking. Analog blocks bring in current and voltage data from valves, pressure sensors, and related field devices. Temperature blocks accept signals from T/Cs and RTDs, and provide scaling for different device types allowing module to convert signal from any standard T/C or RTD into Fahrenheit or Celsius grade for display. Available on DeviceNet(TM) and PROFIBUS DP networks.

Rockwell Automation Adds Analog and Temperature Blocks, Expands Network Connectivity to CompactBlock(TM) LDX I/O Product Line

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio, April 15, 2002 - To meet the diverse I/O needs of industrial automation OEMs and end users, Rockwell Automation has added analog and temperature blocks to its portfolio of Allen-Bradley CompactBlock(TM) LDX I/O products. These blocks provide a low-cost alternative for transmitting analog and temperature information in applications with space limitations and reduced environmental requirements.

"CompactBlock LDX is ideal in situations where space and finances are at a premium," said Pat Moyer, product marketing manager, Rockwell Automation. "The new blocks provide the means for analog and temperature signals to be communicated between the plant floor and the controller inexpensively, in a small form factor with savings on wiring. And they combine with the rest of the Allen-Bradley I/O products to give OEMs and end users one of the broadest I/O offerings today."

Designed for both current and voltage applications, the CompactBlock LDX analog blocks bring in data from valves, pressure sensors and other related field devices. Likewise, the temperature blocks accept signals from thermocouples and resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) directly to the I/O module - eliminating the need for an intermediate transmitter. They also provide scaling for different device types. This feature allows the module to convert a signal from any standard thermocouple or RTD into a Fahrenheit or Celsius grade for display.

In addition to the analog and temperature modules, CompactBlock LDX I/O is now available on two open networks: DeviceNet(TM) and PROFIBUS DP. Originally offered on DeviceNet, Rockwell Automation added PROFIBUS DP connectivity to give users a networking option, especially in Europe where PROFIBUS is a popular device-level network.

The compact design of CompactBlock LDX makes it suitable for confined and highly distributed areas. Using modular EDS files, rotary switches and auto baud rate detection, CompactBlock LDX is simple to connect and configure. A wide breadth of I/O types can handle diverse applications including 24 VDC, relay, 120 VAC, analog and temperature. The module's universal 24 VDC sink/source inputs feature reduces component-stocking requirements and allows greater flexibility of input types. The selectable termination types for I/O (D-shell connectors or fixed terminal block) allow users to connect and remove wiring easily using the D-shell connectors when they require removable termination.

The CompactBlock I/O system includes a base block with up to 16 I/O points and terminations and a communications adapter. DeviceNet base blocks get their power from the DeviceNet network. Expansion blocks, up to 3 additional digital blocks, allow flexibility of node size from 6 to 64 points. This I/O system is ideal for light industrial and commercial applications such as semiconductor fabrication, test and assembly, electronics manufacturing, building HVAC, laboratories, test stands and instrumentation and data acquisition.
