Amcor to Highlight Everyday Use of Rigid Plastics Packaging at PLMA's Private Label Show in Chicago

MANCHESTER, Mich. - Amcor Rigid Plastics, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of rigid plastic packaging for the food, beverage, spirits, personal care, home care, and healthcare industries, will highlight its industry-leading packaging capabilities and commercial successes at the upcoming 2015 Private Label trade show (Booth #F2117), sponsored by the Private Label Manufacturers Association (PLMA), Nov. 15-17 at the Rosemont Convention Center in Chicago.

Under its show theme, “Amcor Everyday,” the company’s exhibit will take the form of a modern home and display numerous packaging solutions in the kitchen and bathroom that are present in everyday life. Amcor will unveil new product launches and spotlight innovative plastic packaging that delivers functionality, premium quality, lightweight, and a unique approach to sustainability and recyclability.

“Private label brands are growing in the food and beverage market as retailers seek to differentiate themselves and offer customers more choices,” according to Jocelyn Cory, Vice President of Marketing for Amcor Rigid Plastics’ Diversified Products Division. “Rather than offering ‘me-too’ products, retailers are refining their strategies with packaging playing a central role.”

A significant milestone in the food industry is Amcor’s unique hot-fill polyethylene terephthalate (PET) jar with a metal lug closure - a first for the food packaging industry. The breakthrough APEX™ patented technology was launched by Amcor at the 2014 Private Label show and is now available in additional sizes with a 63mm or 82mm finish. Targeted for food applications such as pasta sauce, salsa, applesauce, and preserves, this innovative package meets the needs of retailers, brand owners, and consumers alike. APEX offers a superior solution to glass that is safer, lighter, and easier to handle, while maintaining the trusted brand look and feel that consumers enjoy. APEX is a drop-in solution for manufacturers, providing reduced total cost of ownership and improved environmental benefits over glass.

A featured beverage product on display is Amcor’s new collection of Sophi™ cylindrical PET bottles. These deliver a fresh and modern bottle design with strong shelf appeal, providing a unique consumer experience and signalling a premium beverage. A slender smooth silhouette reinforces a premium or healthy product positioning and an attractive shape enables brand differentiation. Sophi™ bottles exhibit a crystal-like appearance and are impact resistant and re-sealable for on-the-go consumption. They are available in five bottle sizes, two bases, and three finishes for carbonated and non-carbonated beverages.

At the Private Label show, Amcor will also feature Method Products’ new 4X Concentrated Laundry Detergent which is packaged in a 53oz PET bottle containing 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) PET resin from Amcor. The sleek, transparent custom container, which delivers stand-out shelf appeal, is the industry’s first liquid laundry bottle made of 100% PCR PET. The bottle is an important achievement in a market that has previously been predominately limited to opaque high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers, as it’s uniquely able to display the vivid colors of detergent in Method’s customary rainbow and introduces significant sustainability benefits. Analysis using Amcor’s ASSET™ life cycle assessment tool showed that by using 100% PCR resin versus a virgin PET alternative, the package’s life cycle energy consumption is reduced by 78% and its carbon footprint is lowered by 35%.

Store brand owners and co-packers are increasingly partnering with packaging specialists like Amcor early in the product development cycle. As a best-in-class packaging manufacturer, Amcor provides strong design and engineering capabilities, market insight, sustainability advice, and quick conceptualization development. The company explores various options to achieve a custom design while also delivering production efficiencies and cost savings. For example, modular molds offer endless possibilities in customization while providing significant cost savings over traditional tooling.

Store brand owners and co-packers can tap the wide-ranging design and engineering expertise at Amcor. ScorCreative at Amcor, the award-winning structural design studio co-located at Amcor Rigid Plastics, focuses on concept development and branding. It uses both applied art and applied science to improve the aesthetics, ergonomics, functionality, and usability of products, according to the company. Meanwhile, Amcor’s advanced engineering services consist of finite element analysis (FEA) and rapid prototyping capabilities which improve speed-to-market. FEA computer simulation software is used to evaluate package performance before tool build and production.

Complementing Amcor’s custom solutions is high-quality stock packaging that meets important product demands including reduced cost, compressed time-to-market, and engineering validation packages. The company offers a large selection of stock products in a range of materials suitable for different filling temperatures and conditions. At the booth, Amcor will feature its broad offering of stock containers for beverages, condiments, sauces, and other products.

“By partnering with packaging manufacturers like Amcor, store retailers are reaping the benefits of quality, innovation, and optimized packaging that will strengthen their brand, create customer loyalty, and boost sales,” said Cory.
