American Bright Optoelectronics Corporation Announces the Introduction of an Ambient Light Sensor that Mimics Human Eye Response

American Bright introduces an advanced ambient light sensor that duplicates the spectral response curve of the human eye.

Chino, Ca. March 22, 2007 - American Bright Optoelectronics announced today the introduction of an ambient light sensor that duplicates the spectral response of the human eye. This innovation will allow for the accurate control of backlight devices by controlling the brightness in relation to the ambient light conditions. The new sensor has a peak response of 550nm compared to a typical industry standard response curve that peaks in the infrared closer to 900nm. A peak closer to the human eye's response curve (550nm) allows for more accurate and ergonomic control of brightness levels. The new series is 100% RoHS compliant and compatible with industry accepted lead free processes.

The SMT photo sensor is a PN junction diode array with a linear, accurate, and very repeatable current transfer function. The photo-current is produced to a sensitivity level that can be voltage scaled with a standard value external resistor. Dark current can be kept below 100nA, which provides extremely high accuracy at low light levels. Usable ambient light levels range from as low as 1 LUX to over 100K LUX giving the a designer the ability to control backlight intensities in the widest range of operating conditions such as darkened rooms to full mid-day sunlight.

Complete reference designs and white papers have been developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the photo-sensor in backlighting applications. Charts and graphs that detail the linear relationships between ambient light levels and device performance are also provided to the designer to help tailor their circuit design to their specific application.

"Our new BSP-ASC6000 sensor will be a big help to the portable computing, entertainment and instrumentation industries," commented George Lee, American Bright Optoelectronics President and CEO. "This device is not limited to battery powered devices, the life of desk top displays and other backlit devices can be extended while simultaneously lowering the power consumption. This is a simple low cost solution that will not only extend the battery life of portable devices but provide the appropriate light levels to meet conditions for all backlit displays."

The new series is available on 3000 piece reels, with smaller quantities for prototyping and development available by special request. Production quantity pricing starts below $40.00 per thousand for part number BSP-ASC6000.
