Ambient-Light Photo Sensors control display backlighting.

Press Release Summary:

Housed in miniature chipLED package, Models APDS-9005 and APDS-9006 minimize power consumption and save battery life. With peak spectral response of 500 nm, visual intelligence provided by sensors mimics human eye response by excluding UV and IR regions. Model APDS-9005 supports 1.8-5.5 V, while Model APDS-9006 supports 2.4-5.5 V, and both sustain temperature ranges of -40 to 85°C. Sensors are suited for handheld devices, notebook PCs, lighting management, and automobile interiors.

Avago Technologies' New Sensors Provide Visual Intelligence to Reduce Power Consumption In Mobile and Commercial Applications

Measures Ambient Light to Control Display Backlighting

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 29, 2007 -- Avago Technologies today announced two new ambient-light photo sensors in miniature chipLED packages. The company is a leading supplier of innovative semiconductor solutions for advanced communications, industrial and commercial applications. Designed to closely follow the human-eye spectral response curve, Avago's APDS-9005 and APDS-9006 ambient-light photo sensors significantly reduce power consumption and save battery life. The new sensors are ideal for mobile and commercial applications, such as handheld devices, notebooks PCs, lighting management, and automobile interiors that draw heavy current from display backlighting.

Avago's APDS-9005 (6-pin) and APDS-9006 (reverse mount 4-pin) are analog-current output ambient light photo sensors (ALPS) in a miniature chipLED lead-free package. With a peak spectral response of 500nm, the visual intelligence provided by the ALPSs effectively mimic the human-eye response range by excluding UV (ultra violet) and IR (infrared) regions. The new APDS-9005 supports 1.8-5.5V and the APDS-9006 supports 2.4-5.5V; both can sustain temperature ranges of -40 to 85 degrees C. Additionally, the tighter binning in the device results in a consistent level of reliability and high-performance.

U.S. Pricing and Availability
Pricing for the APDS-9005 and APDS-9006 begin at less than US$0.40 in moderate volumes. These products are available now through Avago's direct sales channel and worldwide distribution partners.
