Sandwich Plates With Alufix Supports For Large Workpieces

At the IMTS 2004 Witte L.P., Tucker, will be presenting different versions of their aluminium sandwich plates, which are used for fixing workpieces. The plates serve as a basis for workpiece supports and constitute a considerable reduction in weight compared to conventional cast plate versions

In the automobile industry for instance they are used for measuring fixtures for sidepanels, for supporting several single body parts such as B-pillar or for complete assemblies during dimension checking.

Workpiece supports are connected to the plates, which are extendable. A standard grid of 200mm allows positioning over the whole surface of the sandwich plate, which comes in standard size 1200x800x150mm.

The support comprises of a base plate, with a bayonet catch for connection to the sandwich plate and components of Alufix modular fixturing system, made of high-tensile aluminium.

The part directly in contact with the workpiece is often a block, made of the same material as Alufix, machined specifically for that workpiece according to CAD design. Special adjustment blocks help to even out differences, which become apparent during measuring.

Several workpieces can be fixed at the same time on the sandwich plates for assessment with regard to their position to one another.

This quick clamping system allows a fast workpiece exchange, which is especially important for spot checks. Flexibility of the system is especially useful when workpieces or model changes occur. Completely different workpieces can be fixed on to the sandwich plate simply by changing a set of adaptations. Due to the relatively small units of each support this can be carried out quickly by hand.
