Morgan Advanced Ceramics Offers Aluminum Oxide for the Disc Drive Industry

High Hardness and Dielectric Strength Are Ideal for Recording Read/Write Heads

The Wesgo Ceramics Division of Morgan Advanced Ceramics (MAC), a leading manufacturer of innovative ceramic, glass, metal, and engineered coatings, offers AL-995TM Aluminum Oxide (A1203), a high purity alumina ceramic of 99.5% content, for the disc drive industry. Valued for its high hardness and dielectric strength, the RF-sputter-deposited alumina is used to undercoat and overcoat the thin-film magnetic recording read/write heads (TFH) in a disk drive. These TFH heads ride on an aerodynamic slider, which is located on a suspended moving arm, one micro inch above a disk spinning at over 10,000 rpm.

The unique formulation and manufacturing process offered by Wesgo Ceramics produce an alumina of consistent homogeneity, density, grain size and overall physical tolerances. The final sputtered 25-micron layer of aluminum oxide is comprised of the ideal mechanical, thermal and electrical resistivity for TFH heads, providing the target user with a reliable uniform coating, maximum target usage and minimum tool downtime.

In order to eliminate scrap wafers and arcing within the tool, Wesgo Ceramics processes the raw alumina within extremely tight controls. This ensures homogeniety of the target and reduces uneven sputtering conditions that can result from minute density variation. Additionally, Wesgo Ceramics' AL-995TM formulation of Aluminum Oxide (A1203) does not have the high concentrations of sodium and other detrimental impurities which are found in some high purity aluminas.
