Alaska Native Corporation, Chenega, Adopts Blue Coat Appliances for WAN Optimization, Web Security and Policy Control

Blue Coat ProxySG Appliances Enable Data Center's Location in Alaska and Accelerate Files, Email and Print Services to 26 Offices in the "Lower 48" with up to 16x Boost

SUNNYVALE, Calif., November 13, 2007 - Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BCSI), a leader in WAN Application Delivery and Secure Web Gateway, today announced that Chenega Corporation, an Alaska Native Corporation, has selected Blue Coat® ProxySG® appliances to accelerate the delivery of files, email, applications and print services and reduce bandwidth consumption across its Wide Area Network (WAN).

The Blue Coat platform enables Chenega Corporation to centralize its network and applications and cost-effectively operate its data centers in Alaska and the Midwest, helping to overcome the great distances and telecommunication costs to the 26 Chenega offices located across the "lower 48" states. Initial tests show acceleration of up to 16 times and a reduction of bandwidth consumption to give a 1.5 Megabit per second (Mbps) WAN link the equivalent capacity of a 15-18 Mbps connection.

In addition to WAN optimization, the same ProxySG appliances provide Chenega Corporation with Web security and policy control to enable protection from Web-based malware and to provide fine-grained control complete visibility over WAN and Internet traffic and Web applications. In addition, Chenega Corporation plans on using the video management and distribution capabilities integrated within ProxySG appliances to provide on-demand video training and live company broadcasts in the future.

"The challenge of centralizing our IT systems in our local data center here in Alaska was to exceed the level of performance our subsidiaries had come to expect with local servers and services." said Nathaniel Gates, chief information officer, Chenega Corporation. "Blue Coat ProxySG appliances gave us the accelerated WAN performance and bandwidth reduction we needed with the added benefit of complete traffic visibility, Web security and policy control. We would have purchased the appliances just for WAN optimization, so getting the proxy control and visibility is a great bonus. When you leverage your entire communications infrastructure on the Internet, you better know what is going onto your network."

"Chenega Corporation is a great model for network centralization and effectiveness," said Kevin Biggs, senior vice president of Sales at Blue Coat. "We are proud to see the company make extensive use of the capabilities in ProxySG appliance, and we are glad to work with a company that continues to bring commerce and to generate jobs and demonstrate success in Alaska."
