Alarm Management System supports IEC61850 protocol.

Press Release Summary:

Web browser-based SERNET records alarms with 1 msec precision for determining root cause and corrective actions. With IEC61850 protocol, system can receive alarms directly from other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) using Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) messaging. Alarm time stamp can come from IED or SERNET, which is time synchronized with IRIG-B, NTP, or IEEE1588 via GPS sources. IEC61850 alarms can also be re-transmitted using Modbus and DNP protocols.

Ametek Introduces IEC61850 Protocol on Sernet Alarm Management System

ROCHESTER, NY, U.S.A.— AMETEK Power Instruments—a recognized leader in alarm management products—has added the IEC61850 protocol to its SERNET Alarm Management System. The new IEC61850 protocol has quickly gained acceptance for substation communications as a way to interconnect all intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) via a station bus, eliminating the need for discrete wiring and underperforming legacy protocols.

SERNET is an innovative Web browser-based alarm management system that records alarms with 1 millisecond precision for determining root cause and corrective actions. With IEC61850 protocol, the SERNET can receive alarms directly from other IEDs using Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) messaging. The alarm time stamp can come from the IED or via the SERNET, which is time synchronized with IRIG-B, NTP or IEEE1588 via GPS sources for 1millisecond sequence of events recording. These IEC61850 alarms can be re-transmitted using Modbus and DNP protocols for connection to legacy systems.

In addition to receiving alarms via IEC61850, the SERNET system can simultaneously receive digital alarm contacts that are time stamped and archived in the same database for one common Web browser-based display and analysis. The digital alarms can then be transmitted via IEC61850 for connection to other IEDs.

IEC61850 also reduces installation time by eliminating the need for discrete wiring and by providing a standardized approach to system configuration using the open protocol.
