AHRI Standard 1230 Approved; Changing the Future of the VRF Market

SUWANEE, Ga.- For the past four years Mitsubishi Electric Cooling and Heating Solutions (Mitsubishi) has been working with other industry manufacturers of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems at the Air Conditioning Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) to secure a testing standard for VRF multi-split systems. Mitsubishi is excited to announce the AHRI Standard 1230 for Variable Refrigerant Flow, Multi-Split Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps has been approved by the Standards and Policy Committee at AHRI. This official standard will apply to all VRF systems including the Mitsubishi CITY MULTI® S-, R2-, Y- and W- Series systems and the Mr. Slim® MXZ systems.

"We couldn't be more excited to announce AHRI Standard 1230 after over four years of research and debate," says Paul Doppel, director of factory liaison and government affairs, Mitsubishi. "This standard will change the way that VRF technology is perceived and will require manufacturers to adhere to a higher standard when developing VRF products."

This standard covers VRF multi-split air conditioners and multi-split heat pumps using distributed refrigerant technology with cooling and heating capacities for outdoor units from 12,000 Btu/h [3,508 W] to 300,000 Btu/h [90,000 W] and indoor units from 5,000 Btu/h [1,000W] to 60,000 Btu/h [20,000 W]. Each indoor unit is intended to condition a single zone.

In conjunction with AHRI Standard 1230, Doppel led the Ductless Split-system Product Section Engineering Committee in working closely with the Mechanical Sub-committee of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 90.1 Committee, the Energy Standard for Buildings except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, to achieve industry consensus on the efficiency standards for the VRF systems. Standard 90.1 provides minimum requirements for the design of an energy-efficient building. These new standards will be published in the 2010 version of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 which is scheduled to be published later this year. The next step will be for the Department of Energy to reference the AHRI 1230 Standard and the new ASHRAE 90.1 minimum efficiency standards in the Code of Federal Regulations Part 10, Section 431.
