Advanced Lightning Protection Solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry Just Got Better

Even when properly protected, today's mission-critical systems can suffer unacceptable damage from the secondary and electro-magnetic effects of lightning. Petrochemical transportation, refinery and storage facilities are some of the most susceptible to possible upset or catastrophic failure. Presently, more is required than just managing the lightning strike by directing it to earth. Human, material and technical resources are at risk every time a storm approaches. The old-fashioned lightning rod system may no longer offer adequate protection to the microprocessor controlled world in which we now live. Alltec Corporation's newly updated TerraStat® product line offers the advanced technology required to protect your sensitive equipment through the use of Charge Dissipation Technology.

Charge Dissipation uses the principle of point discharge theory to facilitate the dissipation, or the reduction, of a buildup of static electrical charges.

TerraStat® provides thousands of points in each of its charge dissipation terminals. The dissipation of ions is magnified many times over that of a single sharp point. The resulting effect is that the ground charges which develop streamers attracting a lightning strike, no longer have sufficient electrical energy supporting them to initiate the strike process. By mitigating the formation of an upward streamer there is a greatly reduced risk of a lightning strike to the protected area.

TerraStat® Charge Dissipation Terminals are successfully protecting Oil and Gas facilities worldwide. With updated hardware and new state of the art assessment and configuration software this highly effective lightning deterrent provides the pinnacle of lightning safety for mission-critical systems.

Significant projects using TerraStat® charge dissipation terminals include:

Marathon Oil- Fairfield, TX, Indian Basin, NM, Equatorial Guinea, & Haynesville, LA
Petronas - Miri & Bintulu, Malaysia
AGIP/KCO - Kazakhstan
Tennessee Gas Pipe Line - Tennessee
Unocal - Gulf of Mexico
Pemex - Mexico
Petroleo de Venezuela - Venezuela
National Gas Company - Trinidad & Tobago
Union Gas - Canada
PetroEcuador - Quito, Ecuador

"Today the plant experienced a terrific lightning storm that lasted about 2 hours. I witnessed many, probably 25 to 30 lightning strikes close to the plant in that time. The operative word being "close" as in not striking the plant...!" - Keith Anderson, Advanced Engineering Technician, Marathon Oil Company, Indian Basin Gas Plant

It is a powerful indication of quality and effectiveness that thousands of TerraStat® terminals have been installed without a single customer complaint or return. Laboratory tests and customer responses concur; TerraStat® CDTs outperform other lightning technologies.

Alltec Corporation is also the manufacturer of the patented GroundGuardian® active floating roof tank monitoring system. Continuously monitoring your EFRT lightning strike mitigation measures for total peace of mind. www.groundguardian.com
