ADC offers 23.9-bit effective resolution at less than 300 µA.

Press Release Summary:

Suited for precision 4-20 mA loop sensor applications, single-channel 24-bit MAX11210 offers 4 general-purpose I/O lines, and integrates buffer amplifiers on analog and reference inputs. Four GPIO lines can be used to control external 16-channel multiplexer, effectively converting MAX11210 into 16-channel ADC. Housed in 16-pin QSOP package, device offers software-programmable oversampling ratio for output rates up to 120 sps with zero latency and up to 480 sps in continuous-conversion mode.

Original Press Release:

24-bit ADC Provides the Highest Resolution at < 1mW for Precision Sensor Applications

Maxim's tiny ADC achieves a 23.9 ENOB at < 300microamps to eliminate power-hungry gain stages and achieve the highest precision possible.

SUNNYVALE, CA -- Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX11210, a single-channel, 24-bit ADC that offers an industry-leading 23.9-bit effective resolution (ENOB) at < 300microamps. The higher ENOB eliminates power-hungry gain stages while achieving the highest precision possible from the sensor. This allows the MAX11210 to meet the tight power budget (500microamps, max) for 4-20mA loop sensors, an application that puts a premium on power dissipation and high ENOB. The MAX11210 is well suited for portable instrumentation, temperature sensors, and other precision sensor applications demanding low power consumption.

The MAX11210 reduces power, cost, and size in two unique ways: it offers four general-purpose input/output (GPIO) lines, and integrates buffer amplifiers on the analog and reference inputs. The four GPIO lines can be used to control an external 16-channel multiplexer, effectively converting the MAX11210 into a 16-channel ADC. Making the multiplexer control local to the ADC eliminates up to four digital isolators. Isolation is required to achieve the best performance from an ultra-low-noise system. To save cost and space, the MAX11210's integrated buffers eliminate the need for external buffers or gain stages.

The MAX11210 offers a software-programmable oversampling ratio for output rates up to 120sps with zero latency and up to 480sps in continuous-conversion mode. Simplifying device and system calibration, the ADC automatically self-calibrates for device offset and gain. In addition, the ADC offers user-programmable offset and gain registers for enhanced system-level calibration where needed. Other integrated features include programmable gain from 1 to 16 and 100dB (min) 50Hz or 60Hz rejection.

The MAX11210 is offered in a small 16-pin QSOP package and is fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius extended temperature range. Production quantities are available now. Pricing starts at $2.85 (1000-up, FOB USA).

Complementing the MAX11210, Maxim offers a complete family of 24-, 20-, 18-, and 16-bit ADCs in 16-pin QSOP or tiny 10-pin microMAX(R) packages. The microMAX packages feature a simple 2-wire serial interface, with a clock input and fixed data outputs of 120sps or 13.75sps. Evaluation (EV) kits are available for select ADCs--refer to the accompanying table for additional information.
