Thomson Micron Introduces New Compact, MaxJac Linear Actuator

Ronkonkoma, NY - Thomson Micron* announces the development of the MaxJac*, a new line of compact actuators that deliver variable speed control for thrust applications. The new actuators offer a number of features that make them ideal for throttle control, fine lift adjustments and valve actuation. These applications can be particularly advantageous in the design of recreational vehicles, commercial cleaning machines, construction equipment and medical pumps.

Feature - Benefits
- Backdrivable piston - Manual override capability
- Speeds up to 56 mm/s (2.2 in/s) - Suitability for oscillating applications
- Thrust capacity up to 1900 N (430 lbs) - Suitability for lift applications
- Usable stroke up to 40 mm (1.5 in) - Compact actuator with end-to-end lengths as short as 168 mm (6.6 in) when fully retracted

Core Components
The thrust action is initiated by a high torque density, permanent magnet, 12-VDC motor, whose torque is multiplied by high efficiency, precision gearing. The gearmotor produces a continuous torque of 0.14 Nm (20 oz-in) and a peak torque of 0.51 Nm (72 oz-in). The torque is then translated to a thrust by a precision-rolled ballscrew capable of 25.4 km (1 million inches) of L10 life when axially loaded to 750 N (170 lbs). Accurate, absolute positioning is maintained over the entire stroke by a precision potentiometer, which is geared directly to the main axis and provides closed-loop position feedback.

Environmental Protection
The core components are protected by a shell of cast/machined and anodized aluminum housings. All interfaces are sealed off from ingress of contaminants or liquid. The actuator enclosure is rated to IP64 (NEMA 4X), which qualifies it for indoor or outdoor usage due to its dust-tight, splash-tight and corrosion-proof qualities.

Mounting Options
Standard mounting options include a clevis-to-clevis or a clevis-to-flange design. These configurations provide engineers overall design simplification and quick and easy installation.
