Johnson & Johnson Wound Management Worldwide Introduces SURGIFOAM Absorbable Gelatin Sponge

New Sponge Controls Bleeding in Oral Surgery

SOMERVILLE, N.J., Jan. 10 - Johnson & Johnson Wound Management today announced the introduction of SURGIFOAM* Absorbable Gelatin Sponge for use in oral surgery. This new sponge is the latest addition to the world's most complete line of absorbable hemostats.

SURGIFOAM Sponge is made from a safe, absorbable porcine gelatin that has been used safely and effectively more than 100 million times. The unique cube shape of the SURGIFOAM Sponge is ideal for using in oral surgery to provide rapid hemostasis, absorbing up to 40 times its own weight. The product does not require any cutting, making it easy to handle, and the one-of-a-kind packaging allows the clinician to remove only one product at a time, keeping other products sterile for future use and preventing product waste.

The SURGIFOAM Gelatin Sponge, U.S.P. is a sterile, water-insoluble, malleable, porcine gelatin absorbable sponge intended for hemostatic use by applying to a bleeding surface.

SURGIFOAM Sponge should not be used in closure of skin incisions because it may interfere with the healing of skin edges. This interference is due to mechanical interposition of gelatin and is not secondary to intrinsic interference with wound healing. SURGIFOAM Sponge should not be used in intravascular compartments because of the risk of embolization. SURGIFOAM Sponge should not be used in patients with known allergies to porcine collagen.
