ABB Wins Major Solar Award for Remote Photovoltaic Switching Solution


ABB's new Remote Switching Photovoltaic String Protection, the S800-RSU solution designed to improve reliability, wins first place in award ceremony in photovoltaic category

Los Angeles, California, October 12, 2010 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology company, today announced it has won first place in the Intersolar Awards for the Photovoltaics (PV) category for its newly-launched Remote Switch Unit S800-RSU solution.

The award was recently presented to ABB in a special awards presentation at the Intersolar conference and exhibition in San Francisco, after the same award winners were announced at the recent Intersolar Munich event last month in Germany. Intersolar is one of the world's largest series of exhibition events for the solar industry, along with Solar Power International.

The new S800-RSU remote switching PV string protection solution will be on display at the ABB booth at Solar Power International this week.

ABB's S800-RSU solution specializes in effectively managing common losses in the production of solar power. This intelligent, high-performance process solution, designed for photovoltaic applications, ensures that unaffected strings continue to function normally and deliver yield in the event of a partial failure in the photovoltaic installation. Thanks to its low energy consumption levels, the strings can be controlled without great losses, and this remote switching unit (RSU) provides addition security in the event of an accident. The S800-RSU solution's longevity and its lack of harmful components ensure that greater benefits for the environment are always achieved.

The S800-RSU photovoltaic solution, designed to make solar and other renewable power more reliable, is easy to locate and to reset in the case of a fault, either manually or through a SCADA system or PLC. IT also eliminates the need to go to the field and manually replace a fuse. The solution offers string protection with remote operation from 0.1 to 125 Amps at PV voltages up to 1200VDC.
