ABB Wins $20 Million Metals Order in China

Automation and electrical technology to improve productivity of new tandem cold mill for Nanshan Aluminum

Houston,TX, - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a $20 million order from Shandong Nanshan Aluminum to deliver electrical and automation solutions and engineering services for its new three-stand Tandem Cold Mill in Longkou, China. The new mill will have an annual production capacity of 400,000 metric tons of aluminum coils that will be used to make aluminum cans.

Scheduled to start operation in 2012, the state-of-the-art mill will significantly expand Nanshan's production capacity, to more than 400,000 tons of aluminum per year, to meet soaring market demand. ABB will deliver comprehensive automation and electrical systems, including Extended Automation System 800xA for process control, instrumentation, low and medium voltage Direct Torque Control (DTC) drive systems, electrical equipment, as well as related engineering, commissioning and other site services.

ABB's solution will provide operational efficiency, stable processes and reliable electric supply, and the ability to control product quality to Nanshan's exacting standards for material thickness tolerance. The new mill is the first of its kind ever delivered in China.

"We are committed to helping our customers reach their operational targets with leading-edge technology, unsurpassed industry know-how, services and support," said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB's Process Automation division. "Our ability to deliver the full scope of automation and electrical systems, metals industry expertise and successful history with Nanshan Aluminum helped us to win this important order."

The greenfield mill at Longkou is one of several projects that ABB has delivered for Nanshan Group, including automation and electrical systems for two cold rolling mills in 2003 for the first major expansion of their aluminum production capacity.

ABB's automation and power solutions maximize productivity and equipment reliability in rolling mills, help optimize energy use so plants run efficiently and profitably from the start, and provide the stable, secure power supply needed for these energy-intensive processes.

ABB's Process Automation division delivers integrated automation solutions for control, plant optimization, and industry-specific application knowledge and services to help process industry customers worldwide meet their critical business needs in the areas of operational profitability, capital productivity, risk management and global responsibility. These industries include oil and gas, power, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, metals, minerals, cement, marine and turbocharging.
